Last night (more like 3 o`clock this morning), I had the rare opportunity of testing this, as the windows were covered in mildew.
After about 5-10 minutes, the wires started working, but left 20% on each side with much less effect, i.e. the electic wires cleared a bit but not all of the mildew.
Modern cars have a visible effect of this function, almost immediately after pushing the switch. What is to be expected on the E9???

Mildew - I hope not! :p
maybe you mean dew
If it's on the outside then it will take longer to clear, same applies to modern cars
Dirty contacts, corrosion, poor power supply, dodgy switches, bad earths (Ground) all lead to loss of power to the heated rear window. Remember it uses as much power as the headlights
Plus 1960's - 1970's technology.....

Thanks Malc,
yes of course it was just a dense layer of dew.
Anyway, it´s really a non issue, as the main application, frost, is of course no longer a problem for an old lady like this.
In fact, if ever I were to change it, I would order a non-electric, tinted rear screen, but they don´t exist as far as I know.
