Hello

I haven't been on the site for a while and am wanting to start with the restoration of my csl. My apologies to those who I have contacted in the past and not been in touch with since, but personal issues and a lack of time to play with my cars has kept me away.

As you can gather by my VIN, my car is an early carb csl built in the 3.0cs range. There are a few niggling queries that I have with this car that I am hoping that someone can shed some light on. For instance:

1) the carb cars came out with twin Zeniths as per the cs, but my car has a single carb (weber by the looks of it),

2) My car has an Alpina style 4 gauge cluster mounted on the dashboard, and

3) I have scheel seats in my car, but not the ones that are in most csl's I have seen. Mine are the ones covered in cloth with the circular holes covering the face of the seat.

Which brings me to my question. Is it possible that this may be a "special", like an Alpina? I don't know much of the history of this car except that it left the factory in 1971. I know the previous three owners of the car dating back to the 90's, but nothing inbetween. Please bear in mind that the E9's were never brought into South Africa by BMW but rather by individual owner's, so the chances of these being local aftermarket modifications are slim in my view.

Any ideas or help will be appreciated, as this may affect the way that I restore the car - specification wise.

Congrats to a carb-CSL.

I'm not a specialist (only an old poor man from the deep forests of Sweden), but If I remember correctly, your car is currently Golf (Yellow). Is it the original color - is the Karmann plate stamped with color code "70" as for Golf? I think 2211552 was "color-tuned" a little bit here and there. E.g. Yellow rear bumper and kidney etc. Also the rims were not the original CSL ones.

The early Alpina CSLs were based on the carb CSL, but equipped with Kugelfischer injection instead of carbs. Alpina CSLs were also equipped with a ZF 5-speed gearbox and a 3,89 final drive ratio (compared to 3,45 on standard carb CSL and 3,25 on injection CSL).

I would recommend you to contact BMW Classic and ask them, to who the car was first delivered. That could give a hint if Alpina was involved with the car.

Thanks for the responses so far.

The factory has confirmed that the car was originally Golf yellow. It has unfortunately been Taiga and Maroon at some stage of it's life and is currently a gaudy yellow colour. She has had a really hard life, is badly rusted and missing her interior, so I have lots of hard work ahead of me. You are correct about the colour coding and rims, but I have since managed to source a correct set of rims.

The other non-standard parts still mystify me, but I will take your advice and see if I can find ou who the car was delivered to.
 
The car was built on 16 November 1971 and delivered to a BMW dealer called Meier in Munich on 8 December 1971. Are these guys still around?

Abdul bought the car from Joe Coates, who in turn bought the car from Derek Elliot. I know both of these gentlemen and they have given me as much information as possible. Derek can't remember the name of the previous owner, but he swapped his Pagoda for the csl in the 80's.

Joe has told me that the car used to have twin Zeniths on, so that solves that mystery. I'm more curious about finding out about the Alpina style gauges and different scheel seats than the owner history of the car. Having said that, tracing the history migh give me the answers I looking for.

By the way, I have met Frank and am in contact with him, but he doesn't have any more information for me.
