VIN check on an E9?

I may have found the right E9 for me.
But carfax doesn't work for these old vehicles.
Anyone have suggestions for how I could check registration history?

Not in the registry. Oh well.
I guess if the owner has the previous bill of sale it should be okay.
Most states no longer require an old title to register an old car so maybe it doesn't really matter.
