I'd like to know the meaning behind all the numbers on my VIN 2240717. I have a '73 3.0 CS, 4 speed, Ceylon with camel interior. Is there an easy way to figure this out?

Send an email requesting general information to this gentlemen at BMW, [email protected]

In a week or so, you'll get back the info you seek- produced, delivered, color, etc.

In the meantime if you wish, the csregistry link above will get you to a general list of VINs by year, etc. by following the general information tab, then the last item on the list- vin and production numbers.

U.S./N.A. delivered 4 speeds all begin with 224xxxx, they didn't change for model years. You have the 717th U.S. 4 speed which happens to fall in the `73 model year out of 975 produced for all years before the `74 models came out.

Chris,

Would you please help me out w/ my info also (VIN 4310083)? I emailed Mr. Harz on 1/5 and have not heard anything yet.

Thanks!

John

John,

Yours is the 83rd of 393 big bumper U.S./N.A. 4 speed coupes produced, probably in January of 1974. Andreas usually responds within two days, perhaps they take holiday time off early in the year. He will tell you the color and that it was delivered to Hoffman in New York, which is not necessarily the port of delivery, just the corporate address for Hoffman. What he doesn't tell anyone is that they were all delivered with rust from the factory!

:)

What the VIN tells . . .

The Melber Inge of BMW email was prompt and informative. What is known is year, number made, built date, port of entry in USA and exterior color. I double checked with this gentleman if any more can be found out from the VIN and he did not know of anything else. My next step has taken me back to Corporate BMW where they passed on my inquiry to another department. Once I find how to get as much info as possible (ie: interior color, electric windows, etc), I will share the findings.

Port of Entry to U.S. is not known, their records show all deliveries to Hoffman Motors, New York. They came through many ports like Long Beach/Los Angeles (BLUMAX will confirm), Houston and many others. That is why delivery date is 4 or 5 days later than build date, it reflects FOB to the importer, whether at the factory or the port in Europe, not arrival in U.S. Hoffman had all of the import data on our coupes, that would be the Holy Grail to find.

tracking it down

Hoffman it is then. Maybe BMW corporate can shed light on this. Somewhere this information is sitting. Thanks.
