Looking at an E9 in the States and importing back to Canada. BMW Canada cannot find a record of the VIN and BMW North America has no records prior to 1975. Is this an issue? I obviously want the vehicle with the correct VIN. Is there any other way to confirm the number? Thanks Jeff

It's not very official, but BMW Mobile Tradition will give you basic info on the vin in question. Here's an example:
"The BMW 2800 CS US VIN 2270479 was manufactured on January 27th, 1971 and delivered on February 12th, 1971 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors in New York City. The original colour was Chamonix, paint code 085."
If you think that might help, email Mr. Andreas Harz a polite note with your vin, and he should reply within a business day or so:

For USD90, you can get the same info on an official looking piece of paper. Inquire at the same address if interested.
