I want to be the first of likely many to say thanks to Scott Sturdy, his wife Patricia, and the many volunteers who created this incredible event! If you weren't there, you really missed the BMW event of the year.

Some 200+ cars on display, absolutely perfect weather, beautifully organized pre-event breakfast, drives, and early evening mixer.

I've been to too many car events to count, and this one was and will remain at the top of my list!

Thanks Scott and Patty!

Oh, and for those of you who didn't make the after-event mixer at "The Speakeasy" in downtown W-S on Sat. night, you missed a steller performance by our own Jeff "Captain Dig Me".
He dazzled the jazz quartet (and the audience) with his uber-cool harp playing! Nice to see multi-talented members of the forum.

Two thumbs up from me (I also had to leave a bit early).

Tex - did you get the long distance trophy? I am reading the posts in reverse and now realize which car was yours - a beauty! I hope you made it back trouble free.

Fantastic Event. 20+ coupes (11 Polaris coupes alone) 3 E3's, 4 Isettas, and a whole bunch of funny little boxy cars.

Here are some photos:

Nice place to hold a meet:

I would like to have attended the "Speakeasy" event since I was humbled and honored to win the "The Coolest" award earlier in the afternoon at the show for my '72 Golf CSL and Jeff "Captain Dig Me" Baker now owns my '72 chamonix CSA. He displayed it next to me at the show. HOWEVER, my wife and I did not receive wristbands for the event upon registration at the show as many others did not either. I did register several months ago via the internet. Much to the embarrassment of my wife and and me, along with foundation members of BMWCCA who sponsored the evening event, Scott Sturdy chose to refuse us admission to the event " because there was only enough food for 125 people and only that many wristbands had been issued". I did not come there to eat as I had dinner reservations later anyway. I just wanted to mingle with my friends and hear Jeff play. I understand that the event was opened up after our departure. I was approached later in the evening at the Old Salem Tavern by members of the foundation and they expressed their apologies and mutual embarrassment for the way I was treated. I never heard anything from Scott Sturdy as expected. I don't think I'll be attending that event in the future!

Thanks for the photoshoot jh, including a few of my coupe (73 E9) - although I know you were just taking pics of your grill badge on someone else's car. Good to meet you in person.

I cut my BMW teeth on a two of those little boxes - but none were as nice as the ones on display. And I thought they were prone to rust, until I owned an e9.

I am sorry to hear about Roger - I really enjoyed chatting with him and he did have the belle of the ball when it came to e9s (or any of the cars) - I do hope you will reconsider and come back for our sake.

Yes, it was a great time. Met several e9 coupsters including Murray Fowler of Bluemax fame who flew in from CA to be at the event and mingle. Thanks Murray for your invaluable recommendations. Wow, you know every nut and bolt on that car (not to mention bumper trim and hood seals). John posted a few pics of my coupe I see, and didn't leave out one of the most impressive additions; the shift knob (now where did i get that? thanks John). I also headed out soon after the show and had an uneventful 5 hour drive home to Chesapeake, VA. Look forward to next year.

Roger - please don't be too discouraged! They event was less than perfect from a logistics standpoint but then again, they had 3x more cars that they expected. I was not able to brave the food / drink line and I didn't have anything to drink until Dave graciously offered some beers later in the day. They tried to run all of us away from the social as well. I'm just glad they had one porta-John at the Vineyard!

I truly hope you will consider coming again next year. I fact, I propose right now that we set up our own "E9-DRIVEN" social activities and only selectively invite our junior four-banger '02 friends! We could pick our own venue and arrange to park our coupes in a nice display to make everyone jealous!

KUDO'S to jhjacobs for some great photo's i liked the one with my car and Roger's CSL(of course)! 30 + year old cars rarely run smooth nor do the events we bring them to !!!!!!! keep the faith brother Rodge! we'll be talkin" to ya soon.I'm lookin' forward to meeting more of you guys! Thanks for the cred Tex! Capt. dig me

It was great seeing everyone . I heard a lot of people say it was the most Coupes they had ever seen at one time. It was very impressive indeed.

Hope to see you guys in 2009.

Roger, I treated you with the utmost respect, and apologized for the misunderstanding. You didn't accept so I don't know what else I can do. Hard to refund money from a free weekend of fun.

e9 coupe driven event

John,
I actually like the idea of an "e9 driven" event. Would be fun. Perhaps hold it up your way somewhere since it seems many are from the MD, VA, area, or better yet, down this way

whining

Sigh.... Why is always the ones who DON'T volunteer to help out who complain about the hard work others put in for free at these events.

In my book, it was a stellar event, and given the huge growth from the previous year, Scott did an incredible job. Most likely no one else noticed that while all of us were having a leisurely breakfast and then enjoying an incredibly perfect pre-event rally-drive, Scott and his wife were already out at the vineyard, setting up tents, putting up signs, arranging for registration, and god knows how many other tasks none of us were aware of!

Let's be thankful there is someone as dedicated to our cars as he is, otherwise, well, I guess we WOULD be stuck with arranging our own E9 gathering... personally, though, as much as I love the model, and enjoyed meeting other E9 owners, I'd have a hard time getting up much enthusiasm to commit a weekend with just 15 or so other BMW owners!

vinyards....

I have to agree with Phil 100%.
When I invited Murray (blumax) to come and join us, I told him "this aint Pebble Beach, but its more fun." As one of the 02faq guys said, this is about cars, but more importantly, its about people. Not about pomp and pretense.

When I was a (younger..) kid, my folks let us play football and baseball in our back yard (yes, I got my butt whipped for using the laundry detergent to stripe off the baseball diamond..). The yard was always trashed, and we tracked dirt inside to the water closet, but they wanted us to have a place to play other than the street, and the other parents didn't want their lawns ruined. Dad always re-seeded every spring, Mom always had lemonade and PB$J's. And Band-aids. All the kids thanked my folks for everything...I want to thank Scott and Patty Sturdy, Westbend, the 02 Group volunteers, and Tim Creef (Friday's cook out at his house, simple but free..) for allowing us to trash their yard, and soil their washrooms. The PB$J's will continue to improve.

Scott got screwed by his food vendors, and because of the lousy weather (blue sky, 82 degrees, fluffy white clouds..) everyone that should have been home watching the Indy parade, came out. (Sort of like Yasgur's Farm and Woodstock. Except less mud and a more Teutonic musical theme). What do you do? Similar with the jazz bar; more people than the fire marshall would allow. State law, 150 patrons. We sat outside with others, had cocktails, told lies, and Neal and Chris smuggled a wrist band out so that I could make food runs. Finally, some jerk came in and blew Scott out for blah, blah, blah. Patty comes out in near-tears, and they let everyone in. they left soon there-after, probably tired from a "no good deed goes unpunished" day and evening. They did a wonderful job.

Anyway...I enjoyed meeting Phil and Dorothee and the red menace (wow), my Polaris brethern Dr. Terry Semchshyn(yes Terry, I had to look it up), John Jacobs, Randy Rhoad; Neal and Chris with Agave? coupe and t-rusty Baur, respectively, et.al. And especially the time that Murray gave me/us. He's something special. Sorry my dog drew blood, Murray..We did have a grand time.

How many people want to come to my house to watch John Jacobs upgrade my window lifts? Maybe a pay-per-view? They were the most amazing thing I've seen in a long time. Faster than my Volvo. John, if you'll pack up a turn-key kit with instructions, I'll take the first one. Then I can do the McDonalds drive thru again, with out fear of road-rage from behind for having glacial speed windows.

Roger, I hope you'll come back. We all enjoyed having you and the CSL at the event. Since I was parked in front of you, I considered putting a "before" sign on Lumpy, the Polaris Polecat, and an "after" on yours, but thought better of it. It was a special car.

(sorry so long a post); I only have two regrets from the Vinyards; One, that there was so little time, and so many great people and cars, and Two, that I didn't win the "patina award" for my interior-in-progress. Thought it was a lock....

Scott:

It was a GREAT event, and I told you so! As I said: "I was humbled and honored by the "The Coolest" award. Apology accepted! I never said I wouldn't. Bottom line: Don't invite me to a party, then kick me out when I get there!!! That was the only thing that pissed me off and put a damper on an otherwise PERFECT day!!

I was quite disappointed that there wasn't an electric window speed contest. I'd also ove to try slicing watermelons with them... sort of a Gallager thing..

As for a kit, it wouldn't be too hard. The biggest hassle is feeding the heavy guage wire back from the battery. The amount of rewiring is pretty trivial. Maybe when I get back from Europe in June I can package something up for you with instructions. :D

bass-o-matic window option...

I hadn't thought about watermelon...I was considering a quick-change glass-to-blade option for french fries, grating parmesean, or, of course bass.

The kit sounds like a deal. I was totally impressed, and I'm..uh...challenged when it comes to kilowhats?....Dave V. in NC

window lifts

Geez Dave, John didn't tell me about his record setting window lifts. I know mine are mighty quick - only take maybe 10 or 15 seconds to get 'em up - beat that John  Oh well, it was great to hang out with fellow coupsters.
