Guys,

I'm heading over to Munich with a friend later this month for a 4 day visit. Staying in a city centre hotel. Going to primarily drink beer, be a tourist, and I'm planning to visit the BMW Museum.

Never been before ( never visited Germany before! ) and would appreciate any advice re opening times etc.

Any other advice on other places worth visiting would be appreciated. We're a couple of average 40-something Scots guys that like their beer, food, BMW's and other entertainment! :)

Dave,

Spent a day at the Museum and Welt last summer. Easy to get to using public transportation (train) from downtown. Just check their website to confirm factory tour times. We went on a day when tours were not offered...

You'll love it. Enjoy!

advises on a trip to munich from a non-german

1st. munich is schon (mit umlaut, damnned ipad)
is one of the nicest and friendliest cities of germany (probably after dusseldorf;-)), incidentally there are a lot of nice places in germany and the countryside is so beautiful....

these are my tips, probably not all of them accepted by everyone:

1- bmw museum, is ok, but bmw classic museum is really a must !, but you need to book in advance, it is located in a different area, the subway stop is called Am Hart, it is easy to reach

2- in the city, i always visit the marienplatz and that is the centre of a lot of thinghs to do:

the viktuallien markt is near there and is the food and drinks market in an open square, very nice, i always buy some sausages and housemacht senf there
around there a lot of shops and stores
to eat, at least once go to the axnbauer, taste the roasted pork knukle, to me the best in germany (believe me i travel a lot to germany, me frequent traveler status in lufthansa), also close to the marienplatz
and for a really nice beer, try the beer from augustiner brewery, but that from holz fass (a small wooden barrer that they open from now to then in the evenings), there are more than one augustiner breweries in munich, but not all of them serve beer from that type of holz fass, ask them about it
that is my list
i do a lot of walking and wandering in munich, mainly in the evenings when i finish my meetings, but i cannot give details on this

regards

Munich

This time of year be VERY careful to park legally.......you will learn about the public transport system otherwise.

Dave,

There is always the center of the city (the Fussgänger zone) with lots of walking/shops. If you are into churches the Damen Kirche is nice (should be able to go to the top where you can see most of the city). If you are into museums, there is the Deutches Museum, on the Isar river. It has these great scale models of ships and most interesting to me, were the scale bridges - my boys and I could get lost there for many hours.

+1 on the Viktuelen Markt - lots of tasty looking meats.
Schöne Reise

Thanks for your replies - all very much appreciated. I am really looking forward to my trip now.

deQuincey - The BMW Classic museum sounds great. Do you have any further information regarding opening times, a link, how to book etc?

The Haxnbauer sounds great ( had a look at some of the reviews ) I will taste the roasted pork knuckle....

hi,
if i look carefully i think its, veranstaltungen
so probably your previous mail didnt work
when you receive the answer, you will find a phone in the signature, call them at once to arrange the date !

Thanks

Another email message sent - hope I have the address correct this time!

If no reply in a day or so, I shall telephone. Hope their English is good - I speak NO German!!

yes indeed, they speak good english, but:
do not be discouraged by the fact that probably you will need to join a german speaking tour,
that happened to me, the only available tour within the days of my stay, was in german, so i was asked about this particular issue, and i told them that i could not speak, but i understand quite well, which is not all true but, i didnt wanted to miss the visit
so, if you are asked, do the same !

the subway is superb to reach the museum from the city centre!

Visit to BMW Group Classic

Folks,

After several emails, some fantastic work by BMW personnel, and a really kind gesture by 6 BMW Car Club Members from New Zealand ( anyone on here?? ) , myself and my friend have been invited to BMW Group Classic, Schleissheimerstrasse 416, Munich, on 29 September!

Really excited, and grateful to all those who have helped...............
