Here are the references in the registry to that:
VOLVO BRAIN FITS CSI -James Gillespie sends information that the Fuel Injection Brain from
a 1976 Volvo injected engine with aD Jetronic system will fit a CSI with the D Jetronic system. John
writes "Thank God!"
By the way, there was a note in the January-April,
93 Register from James Gillespie indicating that the fuel
injection brain from a 1976 Volvo with a D Jetronic
system will fit a CSI. I investigated this lead since I was
in search of a spare ECU and found the following
additional information for those CSl owners out there
that want to pursue this route. The Volvo model to
search for is the 164E which was a straight 6 cylinder
used in the early 70's up to 1975. The 76 date
mentioned in the earlier Register article is suspect since
Volvo changed models in 1976 to the 264 which
consisted of a V-6 using constant (mechanical) injection.
Volvo didn't return fuel injection again until 1983. I
searched the Chicago area for a junk yard with one of
these older 164E's however, most cars that old in
Chicago have rusted away and been sold for scrap. The
key is to look for these cars in warmer climates down
south or out west. On a business trip to Dallas I was
rewarded with finding two 164's in the same auto parts
yard. On some of these Volvos the fuel injection brain
was located under the passenger seat. This was true of
one of the cars, but the other one I couldn't seem to
locate it there, in fact there was no indication that one
had ever been under the seat. I followed the indication
that one had ever been under the seat. I followed the
wiring which was mostly gone from the engine
compartment through the firewall and it seemed to pass
into the side panel in the forward part of the passenger
compartment, immediately in front of the passenger
door. I removed the kick panel and surprise -- a
complete ECU in perfect shape. Best of all, James was
right - it runs in the CSI even though the mounting
bracket requires some modification.
