My 1970 2800 CS has flag mirrors (I think I have that right - please look at the pictures and correct me if they are trapezoidal). I just noticed that there is a crack in the base of the left (US drivers side) mirror. It looks like the base just bolt to the mirror and could be easily swapped. Does anyone have a decent, used base? Dull chrome is OK, pitting (or cracked!) is not. Or a complete left mirror that I can salvage the base from, or use as-is.

I know that new, repro mirrors are available, but I kind of like the patina on mine. And the crack doesn't seem ready to fail tomorrow, but who knows? I'd hate to have the mirror break and fall off mid-drive.

I am located in Orange County, California

Thank you

Jay, i don't know how easy it might be to remove the base. surely it is put together in a factory ... but i've never tried to take one apart - the trap mirror is relatively easy. i have a spare flag mirror, i can look to see if its a BMW mirror or a repop - i have had it for about 10 years, so it might be a real one. it was only on my car for a short time before my coupe lounged in the paint shop for 6 to 7 years.

Admittedly I didn't take mine apart; just looked at the underside, saw a 6mm nut compressing a spring that provides friction as you rotate the mirror. It looks like removing that nut (and not getting hit in the eye by the spring) would separate the base from the post.

Great! I will be curious to hear. I have the mirror with the cracked base mirror back on my coupe. It came off when I had the car painted earlier this year, and I'm still reassembling the car, so no hurry. But if the one that you have is too new-looking, it's going to make my passenger side mirror feel inadequate.

....no base for a flag mirror, sorry. But these

...not all for sale. But a good used one, even a motorised one, may go!
