Hoping that someone has some E28 window motors kicking around that they'd like to offload. My rear driver window isn't working and I figure if I'm going to take the area apart to fix that then I might as well upgrade both sides to a more modern configuration.

you do know, its not a direct swap - right? you will have to do metal cutting and rewiring. if i was going to take a window apart, i would

1. read about removing the screws at the front of the window. take a lot of pictures. don't undo anything that you don't need to.

2. before you undo any mounting screws, i would first take a marker and clearly indicate where the mechanism sits (alignment marks at all mounting / adjustment screws). realigning these things is an art. take the rear window out by undoing the 2 most inward mounting screws (simple mounts - near the rear seat) - ones that don't move the window in 4 directions.

2. once you've taken them out - clean all of the dried / hard grease out of the tracks / wheels and the sardine can motor - you want to make sure everything moves easily. soaking things in gasoline helps remove dried grease. once clean, re-grease everything with a good synthetic grease

3. put it back together and replace any rubber that is cracked or torn.

Yes, I know that it will be a bit of a job. I think I am up for tackling it, but I do appreciate you emphasizing that I should make marks showing the current state of the windows to make re-assembly a bit easier. Unfortunately my driver side manual front isn’t quite aligned (doesn’t go up fully) so that one I’m going to have to massage a bit to figure it out. Thankfully people like you have written up the steps on the forum, but I’m suspecting I’ll be reaching out for guidance during the process
