I read this post when it appeared last Friday. And was surprised at the number of responses, one from rsporsche.

So I looked up tow truck drivers. More than 60 deaths a year, 1280 injuries. The fatality rated is 15 times higher than the national average for all other private industries.

I am surprised the number isn't much higher from what I have seen. These guys, and 96% are guys, are over, under and in back of 4,000 lb death traps.

Interesting stats, the flatbed drivers I have seen in action were so precise in their techniques that I do not recall seeing them in harms way regardless of equipment failure. I was impressed. Perhaps the M1 here was a more complex scenario than a tow. I always thought that mechanics under cars on lifts all day long would be at higher risk of equipment failure.

I did not want to respond initially, but the sad accident took me to reading about Warhol and exploring his karma in this context.

Arde, you have to include the "tow truck" drivers. The guys who get under the car, most likely a big SUV these days, hook up cables, etc. In the rain, snow, sleet, heat and cold.

Most, I would imagine, have little training or are self-taught. Listen to the police scanners or whatever they listen to these days, jump in their trucks and and race to who knows what.
