Was Metallic Black a colour option in 1971 for 3.0 CSi's?

Hello All,

Haven't posted in a long while but I have been lurking and watching...

Was metallic black an OEM colour option of the E9's in 1971? More specifically for the CSi Euro variant if that helps. Anyone got a sample photo I can see? Can anyone direct me to a list of colour options for the E9's?

I am considering a purchase and if so would be doing a full repaint. Not sure if I want to remain with the original colour of Baikal Blue or go with a darker metallic colour. I love the Inka colour but think I want to stay in the metallics.

If I do go through with it, it will look nice in the garage next to my 1988 M6.

? Black metallic on E-9

Nein--metallic nacht blau was the darkest metallic then available on E-9's and looks great with a saddle interior.

IMHO--while color is a very personal thing--you would be well advised to keep your planned E-9 purchase its original color.

I speak based on lllooonnngg term ownership--39 years--and having had a professional color change done once upon a time on one of the coupes I then owned--from white to polaris--that was a stock color to color change.

Hello Blumax,

I am curious. Is the reason you suggest not doing a colour change because of the work involved? In either case the car would be taken down to a shell and repainted in its original colour from scratch thus the level of work/labour does not concern me since it would be the same regardless of what colour it were to be painted.

I made an error on the original colour. It is not nacht blau but rather Baikal Blue metallic. I believe I prefer the darker colours as there are so many in the lighter shades. If t were originally Nacht I probably wouldn't be asking...

Is there a value reason you suggest the original colour? I do want to remain with factory OEM options of that year like doing a sock to stock colour swap if changed.

Thanks

Max

Nice M6! I have entered it into evidence for the "driving without a plate" code violation.
Based on that picture I am sure you will bring the E9 to a similar state and will be beautiful in a non-stock color. Blumax is right that some colors do not ring period correct to the knowledgeable. But some other colors are timeless.

I do have them sharing the garage and there are no problems.

Hi Arde,

I more wondering how enthusiasts of the E9 look at an example that has had a colour change from one its factory birth colour to another factory OE colour? Plus I'd like to see a colour reference chart to be better informed of the options.

I believe I know your 6er. I am sure you've posted on bimmerforums in the 635 section.

My intention is to keep the E9 (if bought) with a period correct factory OE colour. Not sure if I want to keep the original colour and thus am opened to the idea or something else that was offered for that model and year. I was unsure if there was a black and if so if there was a metallic variant. I now see/learn that the only black was non metallic. Still nice though I am not sure I want to live with the swirl marks... Hard to decide as I typically love the 70's yellows, oranges and other odd colours. I want to make sure the car is done right and period looking in an OE E9 71 colour.

My 88 M6 is 100% original down to the TRX tires. 99.9% of the paint is original as well. I just keep it clean and running smooth.

Regards

Your car looks great in that color combo, especially with the BBS RS wheels. The interior looks nicely done. Please pull that thing out of the garage and take some more pictures.

Is that a 3.5CSi badge??

i was wondering the same thing about the 3.5csi badge. is it a blend of a 3.0 + a 2.5? or something else? inquiring minds want to know.

also, gotta love those individual throttle bodies on that M6 engine.

Black/tan car

Yes - I combined a 3.0 and 2.5 badge- very hard to find 2.5 when I did it. Car has 3.5 motronic (thanks Carl and Chris) @ La Jolla), 5 speed, 16" BBS RS staggered, recaro seats, bilsteins, ect. Have been doing it the way I wanted to and enjoy driving it very much. Still working on wood and some little things. Maybe I should have some 3.5 badges made- do you think there would be a small market for these?

i am not a purist ... but the car has a 3.5 L jet ... and no badge. so it would be perfect for me. can you post a detailed pic of what you did?

Nice looking car in black.

Where did you source the mounts for the recaro seats you have there?

Very nice looking cs.Do you still have the front seats and are they in good shape? My is that color and I need a replacement if you are wanting to sell.
PS What 02 is on the rack in the back of your garage? I traded a 73tii for my e9.
Thanks

Hey Max, welcome over from the E24 forums (M6CSi). Hope you get that 3.0CSi! As you are probably aware, metallic black was not even available on the E24s. Have you considered Ceylon metallic gold? A pristine Ceylon CS has always been one of my favorites.

I only go to the roadfly E24 forum when I am stomped with a problem, but I am afraid otherwise I hang on the E9 board. More intimate... Plain black is a limo color in my book. You are getting lots of good advice from others in any case. Look forward to your progress.

Max,

I'm not sure if you're in the La Jolla, CA area or if this car is even still there, but there was a metallic black coupe at Carl Nelson's shop a month ago. One of the straightest looking coupes I have ever seen (no flaws whatsoever); however, I will say that I wasn't blown away by the metallic black paint on the coupe. Just didn't seem right; maybe too modern and not 70's enough for me. I am by no means a purist, but I rarely see colors other than stock that really flatter the coupe; they often detract from overall design by becoming the main attraction rather than the complimentary feature to the body lines. Only my humble opinion.

black/tan car

My car is painted the standard oem black and is not metallic. The recaro seats are mounted on seat frames that I welded a while back. I want to lower the seats about another inch or so. The 2002 on the rack is a 1974 2002 cabriolet - doing some rust repair and then either the rebuilt tii engine (thanks again Carl and Chris) or the S-14 is going in.
Lots of work and not enough time.

Everyones Feedback - my comments/reply

Hello to All,

First off thanks to all for your feedback and suggestions.

I am officially not going to paint what ever CS I end up with in metallic black.
Especially if it were not an OE colour. I only want to stay with the OE colour options of BMW CS's plus of the particular model year of car I end up with. I was simply unsure if metallic black was an option. Had not yet decided if I liked it but wouldn't even go there is not originally offered. So no metallic black for me.

Most importantly:
I don't want to try an modernize the coupe. I want one for what they represented in their 70's era. I am usually more of a purist. Normally I would not even consider a stock to stock colour change. I'd like to experience the coupes the way there built and like to feel the mechanical challenges of the model and era (perhaps a modernized AC system aside). I like to see how the engineers overcame the challenges of their time. Not that I race but, kind of like "Vintage Racing" of today. Sure a modern race car will out perform a vintage type car but, the experience is totally different. I am not against reliability or safety mods (which look stock) for my own personal cars but usually thats the extent of what I would change...Before you all 3.5 CS's with 5 speed swaps attack me for saying that, I am also not against anyone who modernizes the power plants and suspension, I am sure those cars are more "comfortable" to drive and I appreciate them for what they are. If I could have two I would have it both ways. But only one is in the cards for me at this time...

Again, thanks to all for the feed back and I'll keep the forum informed of my progress...

Thanks

Max
