There are two buttons underneath the steering column area - orange - one on each side of steering coumn. What are they used for? No manual as of yet. I am afraid to push them - they rather look like ejection seat buttons - one for driver's side and one for passenger seat(mmm, might come in handy with the wife). Did I just think that? uh-oh.

mystery buttons

I haven't been in my coupe for quite some time, but if memory serves me correctly, you have two or three choices. You stated you have two buttons. I think I have always had three and all are different colors. If I had to guess, your two buttons are (1) rear window defroster and (2) fog lamps. If there is a third button it is likely for the rear fog lamp.

To operate the ejection seats, you have to press the buttons in a very specific sequence followed by a tug on the wiper speed control. Unfortunately, unless you have a removable roof, this could result in a torn headliner. (Just kidding!)

I would suggest browsing the tech links. http://www.cscoupe.org/tech/handbook/p_009.htm I think there is a complete printout of the owners "glove box" manual which is no doubt more authoritative than my opinion.

Good luck.

If you do not have the lamps, the button may be just a dummy.

From the Owners Handbook 3.0 cs/3.0 csi: There are 3 buttons. To the left of the steering wheel #21 is the Rear fog warning light switch, just right of the wheel is #7 Switch for heated rear window and a second one on the right #9 Switch for hazard warning flashers.

Thanks,

Not to disagree with you, but I suspect there were a few changes over the years. There are the two buttons on the left at knee level. THe flasher/hazard is actually in the dash on mine, yet there is a button on the right (knee level) which I think is for my front fog lights. Haven't been the car for a few months.

Again, there is a copy of a manual (unknown year) posted here: http://www.cscoupe.org/tech/handbook/gallery.htm see pp 8 and 9.

I agree that BMW liked to change things, the info I provided came from my orginal 1973 Handbook.

Different buttons for different years

And in the BLUMAX--to the right of the steering wheel in the lower panel--a yellow button and next to it a red button (for emergency ejection of a navigator who gets us lost)--just kidding--yellow for rear window defrost and red for 4 way emergency flasher--Euro models typically have the green buttom to the lower left for the high intensity fog distance lamp--that was required in several European countries--but optional for others.
