New owner to the 3.0 CS and trying to figure the car out. I have a million questions but basically keeping to electrical at this point since I am having a few issues. I've noticed a few things and would like some input:

1) What is this socket for right next to the regulator? http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/EFma8FVAMMSTwtq1cQxKEtTjwoCCwbialgmvhyhwZuU?feat=directlink
2) Within the fuse box area - I have three questions:http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/fjpM8AEGxto31IrK-LGc2NTjwoCCwbialgmvhyhwZuU?feat=directlink
a) What is this silver "button" to?
b) What should the wires next to this "button" be attached to?
c) There is a black rectangular plug attched to the door itselt - what is this for?

Thanks in advance for any/all help.

1. is the "diagnostic" plug to check voltage etc.
2. Silver button is the trip odometer reset
3. Not sure - perhaps someone here can ID or look at a wiring diagram.
4. A relay of some sort, possible indicators or emergency flashers? Turn them on and see if you hear it engage.

I am not sure that your plug is the diagnostic plug; it could be where the diagnostic plug harness plugs into a main harness. IIRC on the plug, which as stated has an orange cap, it is a male plug (I would have to look at my rig under covers in the garage to confirm).

But numbered 1-9 (row 1: 1,2,3; row 2: 4,5,6; row 3: 7,8,9); the wiring diagram has reference numbers for the plug in a Triangle lined to its end point. Take a look at a wiring diagram and you will see (ie: 1 is at the Red lead on the high beam relay, 3 is on brake switch and high relay (ground)...). Some pins handle a few diagnostics (ie: 2 is on Fuse Block fuse #6, and relay side of the Ballast resistor, and induction lead on primary lead from coil to distrib....). You can use the plug to diagnose stuff and for remote start (pin 7)...

Chris is right about the plug being female.

There is a second plug location, this is the one I use...on the engine front top mounted adjacent/on the water bridge/thermostat housing in front of the sensor. (IIRC on my 2002 the plug was mounted at the back of the valve cover...same pin configuration.

The order is correct 1st row Bat side Pin #1 fender side, 2, 3 closest to engine side; the middle row 4 fender side,5,6...as posted earlier. There are very small numbers on the plastic block, very very small.

Sorry!

As for (c), that is the charging socket for one of those little white rechargeable flashlights. Those are still available.

I would guess it was added in '74. The receptacle was mounted flat on the inside of the left "glovebox" door (the one we are discussing in this thread). Right where you need it to see the fuses in the dark!

The flashlight (82-11-9-413-147 ) is common to most of the cars in the late 70s into the 90s:
E12, E21, E23 ,E24, E28, E3, E30, E34, E36...

You should be able to find it from many vendors!
