What's the purpose of this tar sheet? It doesn't seem to cover anything up. Do others out there have this same thing? It's in the trunk in the spare tire well. Can I take it out?

tar paper

Looks like the remnant of a shield between the metal and the fuel line. I don't think my fuel line is routed that way.

Not any kind of standard tar paper. Remove carefully after being soaked with solvent.
Fuel line is correct csi. Clean it with the same solvent :)

Seems to me you would want to change any rubber component of unknown age that carries fuel.

Hmmm, I think maybe I was unclear. The hose is OK, it's the return line from the FI system. Relatively new. I am wondering about the tar sheet.

Should I get some more and carry it around the rest of the spare well because most of it is missing?

Or should I scrape it off and see what's underneath? I'll probably just go ahead and scrape it, to be sure there's no corrosion under it.

Just wondering if it had a purpose before I scrape it off

tar

paper is badda. Promotes rust.

The only seal in that area is under the tank. Not on that side.

Now I could say that the return line sweats under some abnormal temperature and humidity condition and that it crosses that area. Most likely, Bruno had a bad hair day after one too many warstieners.

That paper! Munich had trouble generating sales when these cars were new, so Hoffman told them they could do a scratch lottery just like we do here in California.

Scratch the paper carefully and see if you won a prize. The most common were:
- A cold Weissbier, you get to keep the mug
- A weekend at the SubanEmpuchenStrujenBachen Inn in Baviera
- A tour of the Karmann facility where you get to customize your own build including the choice of where you want rust to appear first

The terms and conditions have no expiration date, but the beer may have warmed up by now.

The cars didn't come with that, suggest removing it to see if it's covering something or at least to eliminate rust germination feature.

Holes

Yes, what a surprise, there's rust under the tar patch!

Also five holes about 10mm in diameter. I've cleaned up the rust, primed it and am in the process of repainting it. Should come out fine. I think I've seem rubber plugs that will plug the holes at Ace Hardware

Any idea what the holes were for? Something with a carb car? Also found the same thing directly behind the license plate, one hole only

Trailer hitch probably. Never seen a hose on that side of the partition, just a rubber plug.

Good guess! Looks kind of like the one in the blue books but not quite. I guess I'll not worry about them anymore, just plug them

Hose is the return line for a CSi

nothing like that in a carb car !

Yes, that are holes from an earlier trailer hitch installation.
In the tank area there are just two holes.

There should also be some impact of the cable harness around the left taillight? There were no "plug and play" DIN-plugs at the time :)
