What is the purpose of the sturdy metal tab with 20 mm hole in the rear wheel wells?

At the back of both rear wheel wells, i have two metal plates with a 20 mm hole. what is their purpose?

I can't recall anything being attached to it, but I can very well be mistaken.

(Next to it, more towards the center of the car, are two tabs that hold the last exhaust muffler. Those are not part of my question)

Mine have rust coming through on the wheel side so they have to come off get sandblasted and be re attached.

I've read somewhere that they were used to tie down the empty chassis when they were transported from the Karmann factory, no idea if there's any truth to that.

Tie downs make sense, they are pretty solid. Or rather they were...

My guess is some production/transport related...
