What is this part?

I dismantled my drivers door trim today and found this piece in the bottom of the door, not attached to anything.
It is made of lead and appears to have been rivited onto something once.
Does anyone know what it is, and hence is it important?
Perhaps BMW put it thier to add extra weight or give a VW Golf (Rabbit?) type door clunk.
The ash tray is just for scale.

If I remember correctly it was "weight" for the door handle. Don't really need it. If you check your other door and its not at the bottom as this one was (unless PO took it out) then it would still be attached and you could see how and where.

Thats correct. When pulling my car apart there was only one on the passenger side door. Was not present on the driver side. Didnt seem to affect the door one way or the other.
