So my window wasn't roliing down all the way, getting stuck about half way down (manual roll up regulator).

Pulled door apart to investigate. After a couple partial up and downs, I heard a thunk and found the culprit. This spring had fallen to the door sill. WTH??

Wnidow now rolls up and down n8ce and freely. Even faster now?! ;)

My guess it is some sort of spring assist for the winding mechanism.
Do i really need it? Window regulator seems to work better than ever now.
Dont want to pull whole mecha8sn and realign window, etc...

Fine without it and save some weight? Or...?!

Any insights appreciated. TIA!

Thomas76, I looked though posts, only thing i saw was for EFI throttle springs...?!

Got a link to thread? Thx, on my crappty phone while at the Bat Cave....doh!

I guess without the spring gravity would make it easier to lower than to raise the window. With the spring in place it should be equally difficult...
Best way to decide is to assume that the other door still has it and compare.

here it is assembled. The business end, the 'rotating' side acts ont eh spindle of the large gear. The spring indeed helps, as Arde explains, to rotate the large gear one direction (window up).

Comparing the pictures, I think you spring is still intact (they have been reported to fail). So perhaps another component has given up?
I've seen some window mechanisms where the slotted cylinder has deformed; it's a soft metal (Aluminium perhaps even). I have two myself as spare parts where this is the case, and i know that Dequincey has posted about it too + a beautiful (remade but better ) solution for it.

I would keep that spring.
Clean it in petrol and regrease it.
Personally I would try to refit it and see what happens.

Without that spring to assist, the window regulator rivet takes all the weight of the window. While it works now, it won't last long & is a PIA to fix when it fails & the window falls. This is a known issue on 2002s.

Thx alot guys.
Guess I'll have to schedule a window party sometime.
At least its Spring/Summer time now here in NorCal. Dont have to worry much about getting wet any more. ;)
