Hi guys
I bought this a few years ago with the intention of putting it into my car ( maybe)
Has anyone any ideas what type of getrag it is ?
I.e. is it dog leg or not , close ratio or not what ratio’s does it have ???
It doesn’t have a speedo drive , but the boss to take one is on the casting / housing.
Cay you even tell from these numbers ? Or should there be another number stamped somewhere else on the housing ?
Thanks again !

Okay, I will try and get better photos of it when I get a chance . At the moment it is buried under a pile of stuff in a corner of my garage.
Thanks.

Okay
Apologies for the photos not being great, the gearbox is still in its shipping crate .
It has a 3 bolt output flange and although the speedo drive is not there some bushes for it are .
So can someone tell what I have now ??
It’s in behind the paint cans in the last photo :)
“A place for everything and everything in its place “ :) :)
It does have Bmw embossed onto the casting . So at least it was built originally to be in a Bmw .

It is a G265/6. 5spd Overdrive, with mechanical speedo. Basically the 5spd that most everybody uses.
Okay , thanks , good to know !
Do you know if the shifter mounting brackets for the gearbox from my original 4 speed box will work with it ???
Also is it recommended to do anything to the gearbox before installing it , ie are there any bearings or syncro’s that are a must to replace ???

The easy tell

Thanks again!
Do you know if the speedo drive from my 4 speed transmission is a straight swap into this 5 speed one ?
And as my car is Rhd will I need a longer speedo cable ??
And how much does the prop shaft need to be shortened by ???
Thanks again for the info !

The 4-speed shifter platform can't be used on the 5-speed box.
The speedo drive is a straight swap, but it also depends on if the 5-speed has the drive gear + shim for the speedo drive installed. Part # 15, 16:
Screenshot 2021-06-10 at 22.40.41.png

I swapped from a 4-speed to a 5-speed 265/6, and here is the complete list (I think) of what I had to buy:

Getrag 265 bellhousing + clutch + TO bearing + pivot arm + clutch slave cylinder
Transmission crossmember part # 23711175731
2x Rubber transmission mounts part # 23711175732
Shifter platform part # 25111205386
Lower shifter ball cup part # 25111207744 (everything above the shifter ball is the same as on the 4-speed)
2x Transmission-to-shifter platform mounts part # 25111202842 (same ones as on the 4 speed transmission-to-shifter platform)
Swaybar end bushing (goes between shifter platform and tunnel) part # 31351125712
Foam pad (goes between shifter platform and tunnel) part # 23411200936
Febi -made in Germany- e34 M5 35mm guibo part # 26112226527
6x e34 M5 M12X1,5X60 hex bolts part # 26111225754
6x e34 M5 M12 lock nuts part # 07129900047
Shortened front driveshaft (shortened 85mm in my case with 35mm M5 guibo and the shortest Getrag 265 output flange)
10mm shortened nose of the front driveshaft (it would otherwise bottom out with the 35mm guibo)
10mm shortened gearbox output shaft (it would otherwise bottom out with the 35mm guibo)

Great write up !

We have tried all 3 approaches to using the
m guibo

Cut the tranny output shaft
Cut the driveshaft nose
Add the factory shims

Shims is easy, cheap and factory original so we do shims. (Head bolt washers are great!)

Thanks for the link and info!
I love your car !!!
I also love how much space you have in your garage !!!
You don’t have to take out your lawnmower first to work on the car like me :) :)

Two things to consider: The speedo drive from a 4 speed Getrag will work, the speedo drive from a ZF transmission (like mine) won't.

You do need to get the automatic speedo drive cable if your car is a 4 speed as the transmission is longer and you need the extra length. I can't say with any authority that you don't need a different one from left hand drive cars, but I haven't seen one called for.

Here's the recipe for the necessary shifter parts to make a full shifter platform. I got these parts from Carl @ La Jolla in CA a few years ago. Prices and availability may have changed.

Ah yes, forgot about the ZF, hopefully Barry has the Getrag.

I've read that some people need the longer (automatic) cable, but in my case I didn't need one, I'm using the stock manual 4-speed cable on my G265/6 without problems.

Hi there
Thankfully it is the getrag that I have .

The speedo drive is on the left hand side of gearbox which suits left hand drive cars
whereas my car is right hand drive so the speedo cable will have to travel a little bit further to get to the right hand side of the car.
Anyway I am a long way off getting her back on the road so for now I can focus on my shopping list of parts that I will need :)

not sure if this was covered, Coupe King sells a mounting kit, It does something interesting I didn't realize when I bought it, the shifter platform for the 4 speed mounts at 3 points to the transmission, a stable connection, the shifter platform for the 5 speed only mounts at 2 points
you can then attach the rear to the sheet metal of the transmission tunnel, that looks like what BMW did with that platform, seems odd though, 2 separate motion systems
The Coupe King kit gives you a 'rod' to attach to the lower point so you don't need to attach to the sheet metal
I was told by the guy that installed mine though that it was 'finicky'
