What's it for?

I just took out the seats of my CSA to clean them thorughly - underneath the right rear bucket seat there is a metal box with a surface that measures about the same as that of an average car battery, but it is only about an inch thick. Several wires are connected to this gadget, as is a relay. There is no such device in my CS. Something to do with the tranny?

Truly a qualified guess! Rear seat passenger will have a hard time being ejected, the position of the sunroof taken into consideration...

Sometimes owners would locate an auxilliary amplifier for a stereo system. Does the box have any identifying brand name? Does if have anything that looks like it could be connected to speakers or a power supply?

Hmmm... It doesn't look "BMW" to me. Based on the cable strain relief and the plastic (rather than cloth tap wrapped) cable harness, and the ground wire on the relay screw I would say it is something after market. Judging from the relay (rounded corner box) it has been there for a long time.

Do you have any idea where the cable harness routes to / from. There seems to be a main harness coming from the left and a small harness routing through the relay and heading left.

Based on the limited information my best guess is that it is fuel injection control. In this case, the relay would be used to power a pusher fuel pump in the trunk / rear of the car.

Then again, maybe it is a launch controller for ground to ground missiles; something I've always wanted in a car!

What about the small relay that is next to the ECU.What is that used for?
Because mine is not there, on my 1972 CSi
Thanks

That's the fuel pump relay. Your's probably has one somewhere else, unless its hard-wired, which it shouldn't be.

I found it.
When I took my ECU out I tucked it up under the seat in the center.
There is 1 socket with 2 green and 1 white..My White wire is cut from P/O.
There is also 2 prongs for another socket it must have gone to the ECU.for power?

My wiring diagram does not show this relay.

I sorry if I highjacked this thread.

Barry,
The Green or Green with white trace wires are the power feed for the pump
the white wire is a "control" line from the ECU
I posted an injection diagram a few weeks ago, it should still be up. If not I can email to you, What's the age/type of your coupe?

It sounds like your wiring has been butchered in the past :(
