Wheel bearings

Noise from the front end of my car leads me to suspect the wheel bearings need to be replaced.

I don't remember seeing a lot of discussion on this topic, but it seems like an obvious thing to do on a car that is 40 years old.

Is it as easy to as with American cars and is it recommended??

I did mine, no problems, get a cheap race driver set from Harbor Freight, and be careful driving out the old bearings so as to not score the inside of the hub.

Yes, this is fairly easy. Once you have the bearing outer rings out, you can use those to drive the new set most of the way in. Steve's suggestion is probably a safer method. Make sure you put them back in with the correct orientation. While you have it apart is a good time to replace or machine the rotors, brake pads, etc....
