Hi all,
New to the E9 ownership, my car unfortunately has some very ugly 90's 16" star alloys on it currently... I know this may have been covered to death.. however will these fit the E9 with no issues?

Style 5 dish Replicas

Wheel Size: 17-inches
Wheel Width: 8-inches
Stud Pattern: 5x120 PCD
Wheel Offset / ET: 33
Centre Bore: 73.1
Car is standard ride height atm.. however considering lowering it 1-1.5" in the future.

Roll front fenders?
Require 5mm spacers for the font?
Cheers

too much offset

I believe you will have trouble with the offset (ET) of those wheels. Typical 16" wheel sizes are 16x7 ET 11 (front) and 16x8 ET 24 (rear). That means that these wheels would be about 1" inward on each side (front) and about 1/2" inward in each side (rear). This just won't look right and will also probably cause tire/wheel interference on the inside edges ..... especially in the front. You could add wheel spacers to correct this ..... but that just opens up another can of worms if you have tire balance problems.

I like the BMW style 5 a lot; I have a pair of e39s and the Style 5 is one of my favorite e39 wheels.

I've seen these wheels on an e9; there is a guy locally who has made them fit. I believe both wheels were the 8" versions of the style 5 and that the 9s will not fit. I think he also rolled his fenders. Not sure what else he may have done, but he is a retired owner of a good local independent BMW shop, so he had plenty of tools, technology and know-how at his disposal.

As much as I love the wheel, however, I think 17" wheels don't look right on the e9.

I have a nice set of style 5 17" wheels. 7"' with the correct offset. I decided to go with 16's in the same style. PM me for pictures.

Here's a picture. I have the spacers as well

Style 5's

I have the Style 5's mounted and have been happy with the look. 17x8's all around, lowered on Carl Nelson springs, front fenders rolled, 3mm spacers up front just to clear the struts.

ccmguy8,

Your car is gorgeous. I will have to see it in person sometime this summer to stay motivated. I've been lusting for a set of these wheels, regardless of the vehicle that they go on (including my Subaru Outback :)). What tire size are you running? Also, considering that you are running a square setup and the E9 track width is more narrow than the front, did you consider spacers in the rear as well? Lastly, Is the spacer in conjunction with a hubcentric ring to account for the E39 74.1, or is that integrated with the spacer. Thanks!

I had Style 5 wheels on my car for some time. The rears fit just fine but the fronts I had to use a 3mm spacer. Tires I had on were 235/40/17 which were great for the rear but just too much rubber for the front. I think a 215 wide tire would be great for the front wheels.

On a side note the ride is very uncomfortable and the car feels like it is getting beat up with such large wheels and low profile tires. I went back to my stock 14" wheels until I refurbish my 14x7 Alpina wheels.

I find the same with 16's,rougher ride but a nicer look. Stevehose has a set of 15's on his car that has a much better ride and a lot better tire selection. My .02 worth.

I've ran 17 inch style 5s on my coupe for years. The first set was square (17x8 ) but a couple of years ago I was lucky enough to find a set of rare staggered style 5s (8s and 9s).

I know some in our group think 17 inch wheels are too big for our cars, but to me the 17 style 5 is one of the best looking wheels ever made. That's just me.

The Style 5 e39 wheel was designed with a 74.1 mm hub, so it should have spacer rings if used on one of our 72mm hubs.

Just to be clear then, you are running two different types of spacers. I wasn't sure if anyone made a spacer that handles both offset and hub diameter.

Offset Spacer:

Hub Spacer/Ring:

I ask because there are spacers that seem to have both, but I can't find the reason or stats on the exposed lip. To be frank, I'm not quite sure how these spacers don't interfere with the wheel.

in order to run the wheels from the e34 / e39 on a coupe / e24 / e28 / e30 m3, you need to use the (radiused) hub-centric spacers ... not the flat spacers for offset. of course it is possible that you might need the offset spacers if the wheels have a high offset factor - which depends on the wheel width. (for instance et-25 and higher for an 8")

so if you need both, those H+R spacers would work well ... but on the e9, i would avoid the flat spacers as much as possible due to stud length.

I get what you are saying. I'm hoping to hear from the other posters. Two people are running 3mm spacers to bump out the offset, and the 17" style 5 two-piece wheels come from an E39 with a 74mm hub. I checked out the H&R site, and it doesn't mention anything about the hub bore size. I'm not sure why the H&R spacers have that shoulder on them.

As Steve said, the hub-centric ring pictured in the middle of your post is the one you need. It fits over the hub between the hub and the center hole on the wheel and is intended to prevent wheel vibration.

I am not aware of anything that does both hub centering and offset. BMW only used the 74.1mm hub on the e39s, the e58s and the e70s.

To be clear what you need is a 3mm spacer for the front only which moves the front wheel out 3mm to avoid rubbing to the front strut. You also need the hubcentric ring to avoid vibration and to properly center your wheel, this you will need for all four wheels. The small rings in the photo center the wheels and the flat circle spacers change the offset.

The spacers make sure have a 72mm center hole to center correctly and the ring make sure has a 72mm inside diameter and 74.1mm outside diameter.

For the fronts you put on the spacers first then the rings after.

Information is for Style 5 BMW BBS 17x8 wheels and not replicas.

This is the correct spacer you will need, yes it is 72.56mm and is correct.

This is the correct centering ring. Available in plastic or aluminum. I prefer plastic as they give a bit just in case your hub has a nick on it.
