Wheelskin on a Petri

Has anyone tried a wheelskin cover on a Petri? Thinking of buying one (A Petri), but like the feel of leather on my steering wheel.

Coupeguy has had some covered in leather - i believe in germany. its not inexpensive as freight going both ways is involved. attached is a pic i believe i got from him when i was considering doing it. also seems like there were some discussions on this forum about the exploration of domestic covering ... seems like Stevehose had some posts

+1….. I like the look of a wood wheel but for my car I only would use a lightly padded leather covered wheel :-D. I covered 2 steering wheels with wheel skins just last year and am pleased with the results :-D:-D.

Wrap the thickest part (grip ribs) of your wheel with masking tape, mark the tape & remove it, lay it flat and then measure it. I gave them that measurement and the overall diameter of the wheel and both skins ended up fitting perfectly. It takes 3 or 4 hours to install on a big BMW stock wheel. It’s the reasonably priced way to go for a leather wheel. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Thanks for your email.I know these 3.0 cs wheels so I have done these wheels before - At least 2 in the past 12 months .We sew in new leather covering the spokes with the seam at the bottom looking like it should have come originally not that fake rubber stitch.We sew it up in correct period sewing which is interlocking style - not baseball

We charge 275.00 plus shipping

If you give them the right measurements you will have no problem feeling the finger grips. Most of the stretching during the install is around the thickness of the rim, not the overall diameter of the wheel if that makes any sense. So the finger ribs / grips do show thru the leather nicely, more so than you’d think. The leather doesn’t slip on the rim at all on my wheel. Hey, if you don’t like it after driving with it on cut it off and go the big $$$ route :grin:. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Thanks for the detailed Photos John. Loved the old shot with the White Bavaria. I had a White Bavaria in my late twenties.

All BMW supplied 38cm Petri wheels were fitted in leather with finger indents. Believe the 38cm Petris fitted to the VW Scirrocos had the embossed grain rubber foam grips, along with the BMW offered 35cm and the 40cm Petri wheels.
