the triangular piece is not alone
meaning that in the picture, i see also a horizontal piece to which the triangular piece is welded. In my Swiss deliverd May'73 CS the triangular piece indeed is not there, but also the reinforcement next to the tank, parallel to the rear fender is not there.
I guess this is made to directly link the bumper to the wheelhouse.

Don, I think you meant 74, the 73 does not have this, this was added for the big bumper cars.
Let's clear up this mess- I thought you're talking about the extra bracket in the wheel well that is only for 1973
