Where the heck is the expansion valve?

My a/c compressor kicks on, the condensor fan kicks on, freon runs through the sight glass, the fan blows, but no cold air. I'd like to check out/tap/replace the expansion valve - where is it, and is it accessible without tearing everything out of the dash? Couldn't find it on the left side of evaporator fan as per the parts diagram. Where is it? Any other advice as to why no cold air? Thanks.
 
Yes I'll get a proper diagnosis before yanking it out, not looking forward to that, I ran out of curse words doing a rear window gearbox last weekend! Thanks.

Sadly it all comes out as a unit and then is taken apart to get at. Part is available and used in a lot of cars...
