It is time to change the oil and I don't know which filter to install. I switched to the canister that can be accessed from above. I believe the cannister came from an early five series but that is all I know.

Suggestions?

I grabbed the top bolt canister from an abandoned '77 530i, installed it and never looked back. I tell the parts counter I need a filter for that car; they give me the Mahle OX41.

'Sall I know, and all I need to.

If you go to realoem, get the filter number and plug it in to the search box, you'll see it comes up for a LOT of Bix Six motors of the era. It's just about a "can't miss" situation.

Steve;

a filter for a '90 535i is what you need...I wrote it down when we bought the housings years back.

I bought a couple of the above mentioned Mann HU930 For my ‘88 b35 motor. It came with a new rubber gasket for the top of the filter housing and two aluminum crush washers. I am assuming the large one is for the drain plug and the small one is for the bolt at the top.
But I read somewhere that this circled profile rubber gasket is not correct and that you are supposed to use a rectangular profile one. Any truth to that?
