Hi,

I was hoping you experts out there could identify this transmission; specifically, if it is either a CR or OD unit. I do know that it is a 5spd from an '82 733i and I am reasonably sure that it it has the proper bellhousing and mechanical speedo drive (unfortunately the owner can't verify if it is OD or not). Thanks.

Walt

I have never heard of the 7 getting the CR box, but I suppose it could have been retrofitted later. The unit itself appears to be a regular Getrag 265 OD, with the speedo provision and the bellhousing required for early Motronic. Note that in order to use that particular system, you'd need the 7's flywheel, as well, as it has the trigger the sensors are looking for.

On the Euro 733i [up to 9/82] the 4 speed 262 and the Getrag 265/5 sport 5 speed were available.
USA had 262, 260/5/50 and 265/6 available.
Two ways to know for sure- 1st gear will be where reverse is on a sport tranny and final drive will be .8 on the OD.
{Mark the guibo and turn the input shaft 1 turn while in 5th gear}

Looks like an OD to me, the CR has very long bolts extending from the rear of the add on 5 speed casting at the back that protrude thru and have nuts holding it to the main case (if memory serves). 5 speed add on casting is also a rougher, cruder casting.

Thanks all,

I think I will take a chance and purchase this unit; seller wants $300 and will include the flywheel missing in the pic.

thanks,

Walt

yes

surely looks like a 265 to me.

and 300 clams is a good price (for you) if the trans is in good shape. Can you get some kind of warranty from the seller, at least that it will be a quiet runner (i.e., bearings good)? 265 is a pretty strongly built unit, which seems to have better synchros than the four-speed, at least, they seem to last longer.
