Window Decal

John, are these clear with grey writing, or grey with black writing? I suppose I could just wait for the pics, huh... just trying to visualize it.

I am not sure. Based on the web site description and limited photos I am assuming they are clear. The lettering is support to be light gray (there is a huge rainbow selection of choices). I suggest you go through the ordering process to see all the decisions you need to make; the instructions are too clear. They are supposed to send me a "proof" via email to approve. If possible I will share the proof. Once I have the product I will share photos and a review. It will certainly be unique.

I thought it was some political sticker associated with the governor of California...

It is definitely statement, a religious statement for sure and probably political! As for being about California's Hummer Driving Austrian Governator I don't know... :)

Anyway, my proof came back today and they claim it is on clear background. I ordered light gray to be sublte with my Polaris Neu paint. This is the proof image:

At the recent BMWCCA NCC rally someone pointed out that my car color placard reads "POLARIS NEU" which basically means New Polaris. Does anyone know the trivia information behind this? Was there a "POLARIS ALT"?

Polaris Paint

The original Polaris paint, which came out in 1968 or 1969, failed very quickly. BMW revised the formulation at Polaris Neu. Unfortunately, this wasn't much better. This was especially annoying to BMW buyers since metallic paint was an expensive option.

None of the metallic colors seemed very durable. I bought a Fjord Blue '74 2002tii in 1976 which had already been repainted. We have a Polaris '77 320i that Nancy bought new and its paint had begun to fail by 1982.

It's the melamine......

Until about '78 or '79, most of Yurrup used a type of melamine (resin) based paint that was not well suited to weather exposure, especially places like California where large daily temperature differences are common. Which is why all those BMW's, VW's, and my '77 Lancia Beta sedan (silver clearcoat) looked great for 5 or 6 years.....then started to crack and flake off, mostly on the top surfaces exposed to the sun. At least, that's what I was told.

Paint failure

I had a 1974 2002 with polaris paint - it looked like the clear coat flaked off - even though I had purchased used in 1976, BMW paid to have it repainted in 1978 or 1979. I think sun exposure hastened demise, although I was in Connecticut at the time.

The sierra brown was even more problematic than the polaris - or at least the delamination was more visible. On the other hand sierra is a very desirable color for early 1970s BMWs since it is the same color as rust.

The sticker arrived and is installed. This sticker installs as individual rub on letters which are applied on the outside of the glass. It seems to be pretty robust but had I know this was the install location (reverse for inside wasn't an option but I assumed it was standard) I probably wouldn't have bought it. Anyway, it is a one of a kind today.

I may give the company a call and find out it they'll do an inside mount version.

The sticker seems to take away from the elegance of the car.

Why?

Why does it take away from the elegance of the car or why did I do it?

It takes away from the elegance of the car because it is gaudy and juvenile; sort of like me.

Why did I do it? Please understand it is only a sticker and it will come off with a few minutes of pealing. It was just an idea that I had to try. If you don't like it I suggest that you don't try it our your coupe. In the mean time, I will keep it on my car until I decide to remove it; possibly a week or maybe another 36 years. I would also suggest that if I chose to paint flames on the side, install an outrageous thumping sound system, or jack up the rear end and put super-wide tires on that would be OK too. I suppose parking my coupe in my garage next to my loud Harley is also profane. If I have upset your sense of aesthetics I apologize but I must reserve the right to do I as please with my coupe.
