Can the electric window motor be replaced without the regulator assembly or do they have to come out together?

Together. Don't let the window drop when you disconnect regulator.
as to my recent experience, you should block the mechanism arm with grips to avoid the force of the spring doing wrong things
then i removed the three bolts that fix the gearbox to the support, you remove the gearbox then,
now it is time to dissasemble the motor
assembling is the reverse procedure
