I have replaced the door window felt that I bought from Carl a few years back with new felt from Jamac and the windows work much better; thye actually go up and down! Now I'm trying to get everything aligned properly. At first I thought I had it perfect then I noticed the top aft corner of the drivers window looks like it goes too far aft on the rear window; trailing edge is not parallel with seal on rear window. Could someone this weekend take some photos of their windows and post them for me? Photos all around the edges would be nice. It would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to get the doors buttoned up and this is the last thing remaining.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott:

I'm not sure what you expect these photos to show. When assembled perfectly, the trailing edge of the door glass should be parallel with the leading edge of the rear window. They should overlap a bit, so the seal on the rear window contacts the front glass.

Getting all this to line up in three dimensions is easier said than done. When I reassembled my coupe after painting, I spent hours on the door glass. It still isn't perfect. Getting it to look right, the window to go up-n-down, and not leak air & water is tough. How the guys at the BMW factory could assemble these cars profitably is a mystery to me.

I can only agree with Jay, it´s a nightmare. On some cars it is easier than on others.
You might want to begin with aligning the door to the rear wing. Not necessarily via the large screws on the hinges, but by getting the door lock plate on the "B"-post in the right position so that the door is flush with the rear wing.

To get the door glass to touch the rubber seal on the front end of the rear 1/4 glass is usually best done by adjusting the rear 1/4 light. It has more possibilities of adjustment.
In fact you can move it in all directions incl tilt, to get an even overlap.

Good luck, and don´t work more than one hour at the time. A break and a beer gives you new energy...

Thanks guys. The doors are lined excellent it is just the glass. I’ll try working with the rear window to get the edges parallel. Also, the gasket doesn’t compress evenly on the rear window so I’ll try to work that out. Lots of places to adjust and, just when you think you have it, it is off somewhere else. At least the drivers window goes up and down now… I was hoping to get a photo of the intersection at the four corner area where top of the door and two windows come together to check out gaps/spacing.

Pics

The top of my driver window chrome meets at the bevel (midpoint) of the rear window chrome. Also a full shot. Hope this helps.

"compress evenly"

By all means aim for it. You´ll be lucky to get them somewhat even...
I pull a business card from top to bottom, and am lucky to have resistance all the way. Nor do you want it squished at the top.
On at least 3 windows (out of many cars) I have open space near the bottom, where the rear 1/4 cannot be moved further out,or the door glass further in.
(It probably comes down to door alignment with front and rear fenders, which after replacement can often be worse than when the car was new, and even then the overall alignments were not very consistent. Munich sent back a high proportion of bodies to Karmann in N Germany as the bodies were just too far off the specs....)

Thanks Steve, that is what I was looking for! I can get the driver's window parallel to the aft window but still can not get rid of the over compression of the seal at the bottom and gap at the top...
