So. I've dived into my front left window issue. Window no longer opens / closes while the motor and gears can be heard spinning to no avail. A closer examination reveals that the gearbox part of the unit (RHD 72' CSi with Sardine can motor) spins but to no effect. I have yet to remove gearbox but expect to find worn cogs etc.
I know many here believe that an E28 replacement unit is the way to go. I'd like to try keeping what I have - and know that there are ambitious (for me) ways to replace the cogs with 3D printed versions etc. Walloth and Nesch may have a scarily pricey replacement (400 Euros I believe).

Anyone have a working replacement - or clever fix here? Or do I need to get with the program and go the E28 route?

Try to look for used working one on ebay or so.
Worn cogs is pretty rare issue, consequence of old grease and dirt in mechanism.

If you pursue the new motor, don't forget the early Porsche motors with 8 teeth gears are the same as the e28 rears. Later Porsche motors have 12 teeth.

For those of us with cars not originally equipped with front power windows, has anyone here tried the aftermarket Spal electric window kit? https://www.amazon.com/Spal-33000030-Deluxe-Power-Window/dp/B0031Y3VDU

Looks like this installed in a 2002 door

I'm not sure there is clearance at the bottom of the door, under the window...

Apparently early 928 motors will fit e9's just as e28 rear motors do - as Gary points out, you need an the early one with 8 tooth drive gears.

The problem is that anything for a Porsche costs about 2X what something that fits a lowly BMW goes for. This seems to be true for used, as well as new. So you can search ebay or the on-line dismantlers for 928 motors, but don't expect any bargains.

Ed, There is plenty of room in a coupe down there.

Thanks a bunch, Chris. They are inexpensive enough to give it a try. Otherwise, i have to source the proper e9 hardware and motors. If I don't like them, I can just as easily install them into my 2002.

...add that to my scope-creep :)

I just spent way too much time trying to realign my window last night trying to get it to seal properly and lift with as little resistance as possible. I was only partially successful... Anyways while the trim was off I took this pic. It is the Spal window lift kit. I did not install it (the car came with it when I bought it), but it looks fairly very easy to do.

, but

is there not a rubber connector between the sardine can and gearbox, with a D shaped hole, maybe that has stripped internally,

Ed,

Generally yes, I would recommend it. The windows are still relatively slow to raise and lower compared to a modern car. My drivers side works wonderfully well and my best guess is that it was installed about 20 years ago (don't know for sure though). Passenger side is working but not as well, it's either a weak motor, extra resistance in the lift mechanism or the fact I'm testing it in my garage at a lower than normal voltage in the cold. I understand that there is a standard version and a heavy duty version from Spal, go for the heavy duty version. Not sure which one I have.

Excellent information, Fabio. I'm sure that with freshly cleaned and lubricated window tracks and the heavy duty kit, they'll work well. I'll get to shopping!
