windshield seal chrome insert

It would be useful to know how you have been trying to do it.

If you already have the gasket + glass installed, and are trying to force the metal trim into the groove, then yes, you are doing it the hard way. Perhaps the impossible way.

The glass/seal/metal trim must be assembled as a unit, and all three parts installed in the body together.

Was that your question?

Is the opposite true for removal? I've noticed that the trim likes to bend when you pull it from the seal.

For removal most cut the metal trim out then yank the glass

Did you mean "cut the metal trim" or "cut the rubber gasket"? The rubber gasket, sure - cut that all you want. But the metal trim is unobtanium - no way I'd cut that.

Yes. Remove the glass/seal/metal trim as a unit. Frankly, I think you would be hard-pressed to pull the metal trim out of its groove with the glass/seal still installed in the body. Once the glass/seal/metal trim is off the car and laying on a sawhorse, work the gasket off the glass, and then the metal trim out of the gasket. The trim shouldn't get too deformed when you do it in that sequence.

This install is not like the newer cars. You don't just lay it in and seal
Requires an experienced glass man. But others will offer their experience.

Google "rope in method for windshield glass"

I have done most of the install items on my car, but opted out of the windshield install.

Yes, cut the rubber thus releasing the trim :)

Thank you for all your help, this site is great a lot people with plenty of knowledge. My E9 is almost ready for some pics, lacking seats, fog lights and of course windshield!
