I have a problem with my windshield wipers wanting to turn on sometimes by itself and many times it will not stop when I try to turn it off. I bought a new stalk switch a few years ago and I thought it was going to fix the problem but it came back. I eventually just took the fuse out and of course the problem went away. I don't drive the car in the rain so I thought all would be fine.

Recently, I got caught in a light rain by surprise and it would have been nice to turn on the wipers. It was only for a short time but visibility was not very good. I decided I want to try to figure out how to get them to work right even if I don't get caught in the rain again. I don't like it when things don't work properly.

I have been told there is an adjustment in the park mechanism but have no idea how to do it or if there is such an adjustment. Does anyone know anything about the possibility of this adjustment and how to do it? I hate to tear into it if there is nothing I can do about it.

If anyone has a an idea as to what else might be causing the problem, I am open to suggestions.

you...

need to use the search function. this has been discussed many times.

the short version is that you will need to disconnect the wiper arms from the motor, take out the wiper motor and "transmission" that is bolted to it. Open the transmission and clean the copper "fingers" in there, and the bit they brush on; this is the park mechanism.

Welcome to the fabulous and frustrating world of BMW wipers. You will in turn curse them as have many of us who have had "issues" with their wipers.

You may also be told not to drive in the rain, by those who have paid big money for bodywork.

Honolulu, I did use the search function. I went back quite a ways but maybe not far enough. Maybe I did not use the right seach words.

Thanks for the technical information. I am pretty good with taking things apart and tinkering with them but did not want to do it if there was nothing I could do about it short of obtaining another part. Now, I need to get better at repairing things and putting them back together.

I know not to drive in the rain after driving this wonderful car for 29 years. Sometimes Mother Nature plays tricks and there is not much you can do about it.

Arde, I did not think about the washer circuitry possibly causing the problem. I will keep that in mind. However, my wipers just keep going and will usually turn off if I turn the ignition switch off then turn it back on. I still think it is the park mechanism.
