Well like an idiot I forgot to have these holes welded up in the door during painting. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the large holes to accept smaller self tappers? Any clever fastners to put on the holes first? Any ideas gladly received as otherwise I will go for drilling between these holes.

Thanks

Rohan

those are the right holes to do the job, you shouldnt do new holes

the correct setup is, using that holes you introduce a special nut on them, that nut pasess inside and locks onto an additional plate with 1/2 turn
then you fix the mirror support (the one that is in your hands), to the nuts with metric bolts

this opperation assures that when you have any excessive stress on the mirror, the door panel responds to it in a bigger area with the help of the inner plate, without damaging the door panel

sorry for my poor english in trying to explain this, but i have no pictures to help

if you need the parts i can provide you with them, you will need nuts, bolts and a plate, all bmw NLA parts

regards

HI DeQuincey, that is good news. What do the parts look like? I'd be keen to see a picture of them and how much they are. I'm on Rohan.Murphy at UK.rcm.com.

Many thanks

They are a bit delicate. I have broken a few upon installation. You may want one or two extras.

So that part is NLA? They do look very delicate! How does the back plate work?

the nuts (when turned 1/2), put the back plate and the door skin in close contact to make a strong area that will support the mirror and that will stand forces applied to the mirror

so what do people do when they add a passenger mirror to where a mirror wasn't previously located? a normal person can cut such a specific hole. the only option i could see is to put a backer plate inside the door and thru-bolt it

I don't know how he did it but Mario added a passenger side mirror and the holes look correct. Not only were the holes added but they were welded shut and re-cut in a new location further forward...

Apologies if it's bad form to ressurect such an old thread, but, does it matter with a 45 year old car ? anyway, I was really pleased with myself after getting a hold of one of the mirror mount reinforcement plates mentioned above a couple of years back. I have the larger electric mirrors, which are pretty heavy, and the driver's side has fallen off a couple of times. So today I finally gotten around to fitting the plate with those special cage nuts. Surely an easy job. But now I find that actually where you would fit the plate inside the door is in fact completely inaccessible. Not awkward, or difficult to reach, but completely encased in sheet metal which runs the length of the door. Can anyone remember seeing some kind of opening to access this area inside the door ? Regardless of the mirror position, it's impossible to get in behind so I'm going to have to do some cutting.

Thanks all. I agree, these cage nut things are flimsy. Although that said, the cage bit serves no other purpose than to guide the nut into place. Those rivnuts definitely look useful. I still can't see how you would get the cage nuts into the door though, even with holes like Rohan has shown in his original post, and also the plate. Still baffled.
