Could someone tell me where the relay is located  for the windshield wiper motor on my 72 coupe. My buddy is coming up tomorrow to figure out why the wipers have stopped working since I bought the car. Thank you in advance ~ John Buchtenkirch

Thanks for everyone’s help :). Jimmy Dee (A.K.A. Jimmy Jet for those funny cigarettes he smokes) came and went thru the whole wiper wiring system in 20 minutes. My other friend's jaw drops because he (Jimmy) constantly talks to himself about the job for that whole 20 minutes. He figured out that the 73 Bavaria turn signal switch I was using was different from the coupe or at the very least someone had moved the wires in the plug. I went ahead and put the new coupe switch in and no smoke this time, everything works perfectly :-D:-D:-D. Jimmy may be a bit wacky but he is still one of the best I’ve seen on figuring out wiring problems but he only really likes working on German cars, that isn’t a problem with me at least, my daily driver is an A6 wagon.

Is there any way to adjust the landing position  of the wiper blades ? They stop / land so high it looks a bit silly to my eyes. I thought initially it was from slop in the pivot points on the arms but I see now from the dust marks on the windshield that the blades land several inches above the full travel of the blades. THANKS ~ John Buchtenkirch

John,
Pop the blade assembly off the shaft and relocate it. The shaft has splines; so you can change the position, spline by spline, for the amount of degrees you are off.

Jon, thank you but no can do. The sweep of the blade already nearly covers the full windshield right now, if I rotated it one spline it would surely crash into the windshield gasket. The thing that bugs me is the wipers actually stop or land several inches above the end of the actual sweep. Is there a way to make them stop closer to the bottom of the sweep :confused::confused: ? That is the way I believe most wipers work. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Sounds like the stop contacts in the motor may need cleaning/replacing/fiddling. If so the motor box can be disassembled for inspection and the contacts cleaned/adjusted and other parts greased. Is it an e9 motor unit?

Steve, I can only assume so, it’s the one that came with the coupe but that’s obviously not a guarantee of it being correct. I only ended up with the E3 directional switch because the one in the coupe was held together with tie-wraps and the directionals were doing some strange things and I just happened to have the 73 Bavaria parts car. I guess I shot myself in the foot with my decision on that one. Oh well, live & learn and yes, thank God for Jimmy Dee. ~ John Buchtenkirch

Sounds like the motor is correct if it fits ok, I'd try exploratory disassembly of the gear box to clean the contacts.
