Do wooden steering wheels like moto lita look right on an e9. I was thinking with the wood dash/trim they might but am not sure . Your thoughts please .
Paul

I think wooden wheels look great in an E9. But you can't go with just any wheel. For one it should be period correct. And better yet, if the color and wood type is the same as the dash wood in the car, it looks even better. Just my opinion.

Wooden Wheels

I use to have an E. Nardi on my coupe but I've since installed an Alpina leather wheel. The Nardi wheel has a fairly small diameter, my hands and wrist get tired with the Nardi...but they sure do look good.

Wood steeing wheels on E-9's

Original factory fitment was a choice of wood or leather bus wheels.

In 1979 I purchased two Momo Alpina wood steering wheels from 911 Enterprises in Dallas, TX--fitted one to a silver Coupe I then had and the other to BLUMAX--and wore same on BLUMAX until about 2002 when I had a Nardi wheel fitted. The silver Coupe was sold in 1986 to a guy from Fort Bragg in Northern California--with Momo wheel attached--and have no idea if it still survives in that wet climate.

In those many years i only saw one other Momo Alpina wood wheel fitted to a Coupe. My Momo Alpina moved from BLUMAX to my 2002 and looks great there as well.

Thanks Guys
could anyone point me to a link of what a period wooden wheel for a 73 cs should look like . Should it be dished or flat , what size , and what should the spokes or fins look like.

This is what I had in my car before putting a Petri in. I still miss it at times. A Personal from the late 60s, early 70s

Wood Steering Wheels

The above picture is NOT an original wood wheel.

Perhaps contact with CoupeKing for a picture of an original one. Their diameter is greater than shown in the "original wheel" that came on the Davis Coupe.

Original wheel was large, somewhat dished and came with a slender rim. Most owners gave them up shortly after buying their cars--per the Davis Coupe. We dubbed the original wheel(s)--there was a leather covered as well as wood rimmed choice--as Bus Wheels due their size. Must say they made steering easy when turning at slow speeds or when parking.

The Nardi wheels have a slight dish to them but nowhere near the dish on the original coupe "bus" wheels whether plastic, leather or wood as Murray points out. The Nardis are slender and most prefer the larger diameter which I think is referred to as a 390 or around 15 inches. They are great for touring but you do get reflections from the spokes at times which can be quite bright.

Here is another example of a wheel that I think matches the interior of a coupe well. I think this is along the lines of what Murray was describing. While this is a Momo wheel, it looks exactly like a 4 spoke Alpina. Rather than the center horn pad being black, this one is a wood piece that maches the wheel. About 15 inches across and stamped 2/79, Italy on the back.

Wood Wheels

Gary--That's the one I have--now on my 2002 and looks good there--was on the BLUMAX from 1979 to 2001 or 2002--as mentioned didn't see many of this type around our campus.
