I wanted to try some e39 5 lug basket weave pattern wheels and wanted to know if they would fit. Does anyone know?

I just put a set of 17x8 two piece bbs wheels on my coupe. They are the basketweave style that came on E39s with the sport package, in fact they came off of my wife's 5 series wagon. The factory clearcoat on a couple of her wheels were flaking pretty bad because some curb encounters, so came an excuse to spend money. I had all four wheels taken apart, centers were painted (titanium) and the lips were polished. After seeing them back on her car sitting next to the coupe in the garage, I told myself one day I would put them on the coupe (if they'd fit!).

That day came a couple of weeks ago when I found a near perfect set of the same style wheels to put on her car.

I can't tell you how good they look on the coupe! It's a look that might not be for everyone. Many on this board believe anything over 16 inches turns the car into a caracture. These cars are so damn good looking anyway, IMHO the new wheels bump my car up another level of 'coolness'

BTW, The wheels mounted right up, you will need hub centric spacers for at least the front wheels. My front fenders had already been rolled and it sits lower than stock, front and rear.

Hmmm... I'm a bit surprised that your not having clearance issues on the front. That's usually the shortcoming on the e9, the front wheel wells are a little tight.

I have the same wheels (style 5, 8"x17") on my e12. I think they is da bomb...

e39 hub spacers

I heard the bolt patterns will fit, but the center hole will not. So it's difficult to center the front wheels when mounting. I will have to run hubcentric rings w/ raised lip, true?

BMW wheels are supposed to be "hubcentric", that is, they center on the hub. The e39 wheels have a larger center hole (minimally -- like 1.5mm) than the hub on the e9, so yes, ideally you should use hubcentric rings. That said, many people don't and have not had any real problem as long as the lugs are properly tightened. BMW uses conical lugs, so they accomplish the centering pretty well.

Rims from e39 on an e9

I installed 16-inch rims from a 2002 530i on my 1970 2800 cs and have no clearence problems. Also the hub cebters are the correct size.

Alex,
I think you might be missing the point on the hubs. The hub should fit snugly inside the wheel. That's the point of the hubcentric ring. It shims the little space that is left when fitting a late model wheel on an earlier car. The late model wheel hub is certainly big enough, but it is supposed to be snug and I guarantee you it isn't on your car.
