I am detailing the underside of my 1974 3.0cs this winter and discovered a notchy half shaft. Looking for smooth and tight. Let me know what you have. Thanks in advance for your help!
When you say notchy half shaft, do you mean you saw damage on the half shaft while detailing the underside of your car? Or does notchy refer to something you feel when turning a rear wheel by hand, in which case the problem is likely in the CV joint and not the shaft itself.
I’ve removed both half shafts to install new boots and anodized end caps. The notchy feel is the cv joint. I purchased a new one. Hopefully it will be a fairly easy job to install.
It isn’t difficult but a bit trickier than you might imagine. Both end caps need to come off. When installing, the bearings and cage need to be smothered in grease and then it becomes a Rubics cube to reinsert, just take your time.
Hi Chris, Thanks for the words of wisdom and encouragement. Spot on. That project is now complete. Headed down a wormhole of detailing the entire underside. My car is amazingly rust free and dry. Lots of cadmium plated hardware coming from Wallothnesch.
