Hi Guys,

Looking for a (hopefully functional) early brake booster.

The booster in the e3 decided to start leaking even thou it's replaced once and still looks almost brand new with original ATE stickers on there, and so on.
It clearly leaks as the idle rises when brakes are applied, and you can hear a hissing sound from air going into the booster, and of course, no assisted brakes.

Alternatively, does anyone know if someone in Europe can restore/repair a brake booster?
Or are there new units available anywhere?

I have the thinner ATE T51 in both my coupe and sedan, here is the best picture I have:

Hello, there is one in Germany, Dresden who repair this , but i dont have experience with this and it is not cheap http://www.e9-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=27855&p=39661&hilit=Bremskraftverstärker#p39661

Ouch, yes I knew it was going to be expensive if it was possible to have it repaired, but 700€ + VAT + shipping back and forth is.. expensive!

Thanks Mark, at least I know of the possibility now, and it's something I'll have to consider if nothing else shows up.

There is a company in Virginia that repairs them.

Yes, I've found several places in the States, but we're in the middle of driving season, and shipping to USA back and forth can take months if something goes bad = whole season ruined, not to mention shipping costs and trouble with customs etc.
If it was off-season I would probably go for it.
If I could find a used one at this moment, I'd just take a chance that it's okay and then have the leaking one repaired.

I had one rebuilt at White Post, seems like they did a good job, also Ireland Eng. does the Tii type, maybe they could do the other type as well?

So, I have the part I removed from my 72 CSA, and REALOEM shows this as an ATE T51.

I think the part I removed when I did my triple weber carb conversion may be the part you are seeking.

Okay, I don't remember when BMW switched from the thin booster to the thick one, they are both called T51.
Here's a couple of pics of both boosters, if it helps to identify the one you got:

Pretty sure my booster looks like the first of those.

I'm on the road; back Wed. Will check.

So I found the booster, but it is not the one I pulled from my coupe. Rather, it is one of the parts I obtained from Max Fisher (Maxxfish) when I picked up his stash of parts.

Max bought a coupe intending to make it into a race car, but while building his car he got into spec e46 racing. He sold the body, motor and interior from the coupe, and had everything else laying around. He gave it away, on the condition that I took it all.

I believe his car was a 73 that was roadworthy before he pulled it apart, but don't know for sure. The rust is only light surface rust. A friend of mine has a vacuum pump; I am going to test the booster.

Here are the pictures:
