Mine is missing the ring around #1 plug plus the diagnostic port is boken and missing the orange cap. My car is an E3 but it looks like the E9 is the same.

As Chris has mentioned it might be a good idea to make a new wire. All parts are available new if you will look for.

I think @eriknetherlands is selling an orange plug for diagnostic connector.
The connector housing and terminals are available new (AMP Mate-N-lok System) - see separate thread on the forum.

Where to find the shielded cable with the induction loop that fits over #1 plug wire? Here is the complete set Dick is referring to. The original setup is very cool and hard to find, most were lost after the first plug wire change. I found an NOS coil wire with the two leads to make my set (and yes, I carry a backup coil wire just in case):

It is not piece of cake and probably someones needs to sacrifice the original form but in some cases there is no other way.

Not pushing to change or convince but coil sensors were popular up to 90's for injection systems where E9 was not alone with such a solution as for distributor cap size and contact diameter.

Just supporting suggestion from @HB Chris on that.

In the end that sensor is not absolutely important for proper operation so can stay as long HT wires are not broken in any way. I can only imagine how it can look in details after ~60 or high temperature and oil/fuel fumes full environment. ;-)

Here's where I am with this Bavaria. The project is the hobby for me and this project is essentially complete. My historic modus operandi is to get this one on the market and start the search for the next project. I don't have the money or the space to keep more than a couple completed collector cars plus my two daily drivers and I'm at my limit. However, I find myself dragging my feet on implementing my usual course of action. Maybe I'm still enjoying the cars I own too much. Maybe I'm admitting it's getting physically tougher to do another complete restoration. Whatever it is, I need to give myself more time to figure out the next steps but while still having valid reasons to be in the shop. I'm hunting (and finding) those little things that aren't quite right that could be fixed, tweaked, cleaned, improved. This harness is one of those things. It doesn't need to be made fully operative. I'm pretty sure I'll never use that diagnostic port (although it would be fun and interesting to do so :) ). It works fine as is.

I thought the easiest way to do this little job is just to replace the complete harness. If this is tougher to find than I thought, then replacing the 3 broken parts is certainly an option. I'll follow up with Eric on the orange cap. How about the diagnostic plug...hopefully with enough of the wiring harness to splice to my existing. The same with the #1 spark plug cable sensor. @Stevehose is it possible to splice the sensor back into my harness?

The male and female sockets are available. Do you have the metal bracket that the socket mounts into? Someone may have one of those lying around. I believe it can be spliced together provided you can get the inductor wire - these were not easy to find for me. The 2002FAQ is where I found mine and I paid top $ for it because I had yet to find another. I basically made one harness out of 2-3 pieces.

Thanks Steve. I do have the metal bracket for the diagnostic plug. I'll keep looking for the socket and the orange cap and the sensor for #1. No hurry on this project and if it doesn't ever happen it is nothing to lose sleep over.

I have an extra socket I think - I will check and send it to you, if not I will send you the link of the source
