My existing driveshaft cannot be shortened. Does anyone have one laying around? Or--does anyone know if the front half from another BMW is a direct bolt on?

What is your rear piece length over all as installed? Measure from the outer yoke flange ( the surface that bolts to the yoke ) to the outer end of the threads.

I don't know. It is at a driveline shop in a another city and they say they cannot shorten it.

Hopefully they are not going to shorten both sections. Can you call them up and have them give you the length of the piece you are keeping, as in the rear piece.

They are shortening nothing. They were going to do the front half only--but the said the u joints were not original and had been pinned or something???? Anyway--they felt they could not shorten it. Then they said they could get a replacement one the same size and shorten that one for over $500!!! Hence my need for a different solution.

They are obviously trying to rob you! Get your patrs and go to another shop, shortening and balancing shouldn't cost you more than $250 - a bit more with new U-joints and/or splines.

Good luck

I think the automatic e3 front section is the right length....This conversion has been done many times so it should not be a huge problem. I will ask around and see if any one local here has one.

Thanks

Drive line Specialists in Portland. rebuilds the drive shafts with replaceable u joints and will have the correct size you need in stock. They will even send you the shipping label to return the core to them. Not cheap but a high end product with service as good as it gets

I talked with them and they were at over $500. The car is going to be a driver. I am not spending that sort of money on it.

Did you get your original drive shaft back? If you have deemed that the u-joints are serviceable, make your measurements on how much you need to shorten the front half and start calling welding shops. We have one locally that shortens drive shafts.

I understand the pain of paying normal prices for services you can't perform yourself, but sometimes you have to bite the bullet. When you drive your E3 every day, it has to be reliable and in good condition, used parts are good as long as they work. My recent E28 rear axle conversion cost me about $250 total, paying to have it done would have cost much more. The new rear axle was interfering with the exhaust system, but I can't bend 2-1/2" tubing, so I had to visit The Muffler Store and pay $150 to get my exhaust system fixed and a new muffler installed.
