Guys, I have a slightly tricky request.

I am in Sydney, and need a very specific crown wheel and pinion.

So the late sideloader diff, used on the e12, production from 9/76 onwards, was a 10 bolt, slide in flange, sideloader.

The 525, and the 528 (not 528i), was a 3.64, and I need one of those ratio gearing sets.

I do not need the whole diff, but will pay for a whole diff, if need be.

So, does anyone have a lead on a non lsd, post 9/76, diff, from a 525, or 528?

Please :)

The 3.64, can only come out of that particular diff (for compatability with my existing slide in flange sideloader).

Thanks,

Mike

You realize the 528 and 525 were never sold in the US..

what ratio posi unit do you have now?

have you spoken with the breaker up by Gazz?

maybe trade out your 10 bolt posi for a 8 bolt posi 3.64 diff?

I would also check with Albrecht.
Walloth sells LSD custom units - his gear shop may have what you need.

Swap an 8 bolt 3.64 LSD for a 10 bolt LSD whatever you have or buy a 8 bolt LSD and sell your 10 bolt LSD?
This country is swimming in 8 bolt 3:45 diffs.

Did not realize the 525 and 528 were not sold in USA. They are listed as EUR in hindsight.

I am keen to keep the 10 bolt, I know I am being picky, but engine has 270hp, and I plan on using it in road rallys now and then, with a 10 bolt drexler lsd..

I am sure difference is marginal, 10 bolt sounds stronger than 8 bolt !

Guys at difflab, are very very hard to get a hold of at moment- their voicemail says, they will not respond to voicemail, and if you email, it will be prioritised behind their existing racing customers!! (which I get). I will try them again.

Re ECS, it is a diff part number, not a gear set part number, and given there are 8 bolt sideloaders, with 3.64, which are interchangeable, i do not trust it, But , thanks for the lead, I will follow it up.

Re Walloth, yep, i checked with them, no initial joy, but will ask again.

I have a 3.45 open, 10 bolt sideloader here, v good nick, will be used to build the new lsd diff.

For the benefit of the group, i purchased a 3.64 e34, 188mm, early diff. (cheap).. The gear set is perfect, will work, except the "spline teeth " on the pinion are too fine for the sideloader drive shaft coupling.!!

so close............

Thnaks again SFdon,, one final hail mary..

I have a pic of the standard, drive shaft flange, 84mm, 4 bolt. Have also included a pic from frogisland, with the 2 different , pinion patterns, that he has seen used in the sideloader.

Did bmw make 2 different 4 bolt 84mm flanges for the sideloader? One with wide teeth (early), and one with fine teeth (Later)?

You could try Penninsula BM (wreckers in Mornington Vic) doubt they would sell cw/p but a diff is a possibility

I will say that the early and late diffs are only alike on the outside.

From Difflab-

Hi,

Almost nothing, sorry. You'd have better luck chasing collectors and wreckers of old BMWs.

Cheers”

Have found a "tight spline" driveshaft coupling. I will check it works with the pinion from e34 medium diff tomorrow.... but looks good.

.
So, I have all my answers..

slide out flange, 10 bolt/m12 sideloader, from say early e24, or late e12, used fine spline pinion, so has the fine spline coupling.

Diff is compatible with the early medium "rearloader" diff crownwheel and pinion, as found in the e28, late e24, and early e34 etc.

I have just installed a 3.64 crownweel and pinion, from a 94 e34 520i, into my late sideloader.

All of those later crownwheel and pinion ratios should work, in the late sideloader.

I addition, the crownwheel, I took out of the late sideloader was a low drag , 25mm, type, the one I replaced it with, from the 520i, is a regular 30mm one.

My diff man tells me, all bolt in, no machining, just shim adjustments as per normal when replacing crownwheel and pinion.
