wtb fuel tank aluminum for 3.0 csl

Fuel cells

Gianni,

Pls. explain a little more... size ( gal/ltr), stockish location or similar to Motorsport? Any special features.. with pump, baffles, foam? Cage size if you have already? If you're doing stock, I'd be concerned about the flanges cracking from stress over time from air time! But maybe you want to break Hanz's record.

There are many suppliers of racing cells here- try Summit Racing to get a feel for what your needs are.

Or if you're really out to win, do what the engineers did then.... get your hole saw out and start cutting until you win!

FYI- Enjoy- http://historicracingbmw.blogspot.com/search/label/ALPINA - Engine Specifications

PS- Haven't given up on the magnesium yet.. bad corrosion though.

Jerry,

What source and material is good for the seal to use when re-installing the tank? Closed cell some type of material. I have seen some weather striping at HD that is closed cell. But would prefer a coupe'rs historical perspective.

Thanks for allowing me to add this into the thread as Gianni will need to place seal and I am pulling my tank to do a flush and seal while I do an upper engine refresh.
Jon

Jon,

Do not use foam, even closed cell as moisture may be trapped. I used 3M Strip Caulk, buy a small box at any auto paint supply house, it will last forever and you will find other uses for it as well.

Tank Perimeter Sealant

I agree with Chris to not use closed cell.

Since the flange is wide and it's best to seal from both sides and use the longest strips to avoid leaks, here is my recommendation:

1) Presstite- it's the same black material on your a/c evap. lines. 2" wide x 30' roll. $5.

2.) Bithuthane (commercial rubber roofing material) known at Home Depot as "sill sealer". Used to seal windows before siding. Cheap.

3) Strip caulk- 3M- use three together as wire rope.

4) Windshield sealer.

I would also trim and paint after to seal the seam both sides. ( Karmann body)
