It looks like your low beam is the one needing replacement which is an H4, or is it just the photo? New ones are $45 or so.

What you want is a low beam H1, as found on all Euro spec BMW's of the day, not an H4. The Hella H1's have that characteristic blacked-out look when seen from straight on. I have only found them at the BMW dealer or BMW OEM parts suppliers. Part number is 63121356412 and the hi beam H1 is 63121356409. They are pricey at 99.90 and 88.02 respectively. Take a bit of the sting off by ordering from www.getbmwparts.com at 20% off. Best deal for OEM parts I've found so far. Pic below shows the black-out aspect of these H1's. They also have the city light (4W bulb) that is the Euro equivalent to our parking lights. You would lose that if you replace it with a non-Euro headlamp.

Thanks for the tips. All my lights say H1 on them, so that is very useful to know that there are two versions. I just ordered a bunch of parts from Tisher, so if they haven't shipped yet, maybe they can get one of these in the order too.

At the risk of belaboring the point, different manufacturers (Cibie, Marchal, Carello, Bosch et. al.) had slightly different designs that "might" draw attention to themselves if you were to mix and match. In particular, I am referring to flat lenses versus convex or "crowned" lenses (although different fluting and brighter reflectors might still make for less obvious differences). :wink:

I was not clear in that I wondered if the high beams and low beams on the Hella H1's were interchangeable. I guess they have different reflectors inside.
ALso, I am glad the car has headlight wipers for the curiosity factor, but I know I will never need these.

different optics in the glass. low beams have horizontal cutoffs to prevent glare to oncoming traffic. high beans have no cutoff.

So then one might "get away" with H1s in both positions, running higher wattage bulbs, since they have the cutoff?
Who am I kidding, E9 lights would never blind anyone. Well almost no one.
I put a pair in the wife's Bavaria back in the day. One night a motorcycle, with passenger, was tailing us. Damn bright lights right into my eyes (I was driving that night). I let 'em pass, then flipped on the highs and followed them for a time. heh, heh. Saw some motions that suggested their discomfort. A little give and take on the roads of Hawaii.
