Working on the winter project (here) and am debating between a couple of options for the engine which is coming out, and parts availability may push me in a direction.

Option 1:

I have a low mileage US market m30b34 engine and if I use it I would like to replace with euro 9: or 10:1 pistons. I am in discussions with someone on this forum, but continuing to search.

Option 2:

My original 1972 m30b30 runs, but compression is 140 in the lowest cylinder and 160 in the highest. Considering a refresh with a ring and valve job. Head is a 1977 unit, and is one repair that I don’t have receipts for so not sure what was done.

I am considering acquiring stock bore 88.97 European piano-top pistons as an option.

IMHO I would rebuild your original one, we're a dying breed these days. Not sure the mavericks here will fawn over the M30B34 for a replacement. As you know, I just did the same to my original engine with a bore to 89.5mm and 10:1 JE pistons. In a few days you'll see how that worked out LOL. I'm an original engine romantic so this was the option which checked that box plus made things a little "spicier" to quote Don. I have a Schrick cam, headers, and triple Webers so I'm tapped out mod-wise, and I'm not in need of a land rocket to get me up the beach road. I'd be happy to share with you my costs of doing this project. I saved a lot of coin doing the labor myself (except installing the rotating assembly in the block-the machine shop did that after boring-I did the rest) which enabled me to blow more coin on the engine compartment resto.

My $.02 worth of coin.

i have to agree with @Stevehose on this - if my coupe had its original 2.8L in it ... it still would. instead i got a USA m30b34 - heavy YAWN. i still have a b34, but its a euro b34 w/ 10:1 compression built by @sfdon.

Hey I'm considering a new Cam and maybe a pair of Weber 38/38's for my 2800cs. Is that sufficient to "spice it up" or do I need the larger/higher compression pistons too. I have a 2800cs with original motor.

remember, the 2800cs already has higher compression. 9.0:1 compared to the 8.0:1 of the 3.0cs. the CSi engine was higher compression 9.3:1 if i remember correctly. the higher compression just winds up quicker. sure, replacing pistons with 10:1 and a schrick 280+ cam will greatly spice things up along with doing something with carbs. i know @Stan uses / used the 38/38 webers and spoke highly of them. triple 40 dcoes will probably offer more excitement - i recommend following the @Stevehose thread on his engine rebuild of his 3.0cs. so the long and short of it is the 3.0cs going from 8:1 to 10:1 is going to make a huge difference ... the 2800 going from 9:1 to 10:1 will make a difference ... how much is a question that i can't answer. this is a question that somebody like @sfdon might be able to offer more professional advice on

Yeah @sfdon and I have discussed fuel injection :) as another option but yes, he's the man. I've always feared DCOE's, scarred by a friend having to pull over and change the jet's on his DCOE's on the way to Tahoe :)

Bump with refinement.

I am focused on refreshing the original engine. Now looking for 88.97mm piano-top pistons. Let me know if you have any, or a lead to some!

might want to post a separate WTB as more members might see it, especially our European ones.
