WTB: Roof section

Does anyone in the UK have a spare roof or access to one? The purpose is to remove the rather nasty sunroof on my car, so only that section would be used but the curvature being matched would be a great help. Any help appreciated..
 
I'd imagine a good metal person w/an english wheel, can get the curve right.

You have an OEM sunroof or aftermarket? If the former, why not keep it?

Your car is almost a mirror image of mine, including the aftermarket sunroof! I’ve considered trying to get rid of it too, but that’s a long way down the road for me. Please keep me in the loop should you get rid of it. I!d love to see how it goes.

That's a really good looking car. Shame that the ravages of the 70s (or 80s) has affected your sweet car.

At least you can drive your car while searching for a roof. Too bad you didn't get Markos' roof when he was selling it since it was only barely 200 miles from you.
 
Thanks! The previous owner lived in Washington, so it might have been even closer to him before I acquired it. Oh wait, and you do too. I've been meaning to ask the Seattle area folks if they know the car. Haven't had a chance to get any very good pictures yet though. I got it in October just in time for the really good weather to set in.

My guess is that it was installed while Reagan was president, wait - make that while Helmut Kohl was chancellor. They did a good job with the install and it's a good quality piece, so at least there's that. At some point in their lives many of these coupes have just been "pretty old cars" before they started ascending in value again. I can see some youngish German buying it, but he really wanted a 635, so he "snazzed" it up with an aftermarket sunroof. I was probably that foolish once too.

If I am interpreting your post correctly, your hope is to remove the aftermarket sunroof and just weld in a rectangle of steel - one with the correct compound curvature - into that area. I'm no bodywork expert, but I'm not sure you will be pleased with the result of doing it that way.

Steel warps a bit as you weld it, so getting the curvature(s) of the donor section to exactly match the curvature of the original roof is going to be tough. Once the paint is applied, buffed and waxed, slight irregularities are likely to become visible. Maybe that won't bother you. But I think the better way to fix this would be to graft on an entire roof section, including the upper half of the pillars. You're going to have to replace the headliner anyways, so aside from removing/replacing the F and R glass, this approach isn't that much more work.

But talk to you bodyshop and see what they advise.
 
careful stitch welding should minimize warpage.

Yes, finding a whole roof section MAY be easier, but may be tougher to find.

Of course, I would try to find a whole roof section with a FACTORY sunroof. BUt that's just me.
