what about putting a spare tire well from an e24? then you would be able to put a 16" x 8" spare in the trunk

That is interesting, I didn't think of the fact that it might show, but I want to stick with original anyway
a deeper well was suggested as an advantage to hold a wider tire,

Yes, the well won't even hold one of my 215/65/14 tires I had on before i put on the 15" rims so I had to buy a 195 as a spare on the 14".

FWIW, CSI inc in Pomona sells some kind of repair kit (I think around $400)
