I think he used a foam that is too thick under the trunk covers.
Thanks Bob and Chris, just sent the eBay guy an email. The trunklid panels do look a little thick to my eye. hopefully he calls me. I've been in touch with Christof of CS Werk in Germany. He has lots of good stuff for the trunk of an E9.

The original foam was paper thin and crumbled easily.

E3s seem to get much more love in Europe than in North America.
