We like the black ones on red cars..

I think only white is correct. Lots of other issues with these, stickers, sticker locations, clocking of the distributor, strut bearing washers, …….
there has to be a reason that BMW sold black ones at the end. i haven't looked at that many '74 cars closely. but most of the bat 1 + 2 cars i have seen had black ones. there was one bat 1 that i saw that had white ones. the fjord bat 2 above was done by @Gerrit so perhaps he knows something more definitive. maybe it was just a bat thing.

I have also seen black on BMW pictures (service or user manual) for later cars.

Chris is right, they should be white, this is just an evolutionary thing. As we all know, those white thumbscrews turn ungly yellow-ich in time, so BMW restocked in black but still under the same bmw part number. So no, the black ones are not a bat thing or any special CSL equipment. At the time I restored that car, I ordered 6 pieces from BMW: two came in white, four in black! I installed black ones while looking for NOS white ones. Luckily, the white ones became available again but by that time, the car was gone. So, I guess I still owe six white screws to the new owner.

thanks Gerrit for the confirmation. its always great to know what is correct, and luckily all i have are white ones.
