Wunder Car

This was recorded in February 2020 at the art fair ART Karlsruhe in Germany. Three guys of the E3-Club, including me, were there. Christian Zschocke, a club member himself, was very pleased we showed up. Without exaggeration, the car IS perfect and, as intended, makes you smile. We stayed until the fair closed so I can tell the New Horizon started and ran perfectly well. The car is a 2500 Automatic USA Series 1, was delivered new to Rome and probably never left Italy until 2016. Christian Zschocke bought the car, had it restored to Wow!, and gathered a jury (without himself) to choose an artist for the project. They elected Heiner Meyer who laid down the design, then Walter Maurer who painted several of the BMW Art Cars put in on the car, including Heiner Meyer's signature on the bootlid. Even if one does not like the artwork the craftsmanship is just amazing.

First outing of the New Horizon was in December 2018 at the Art Miami, followed by Amelia Island in spring 2019. After 49 years the car finally made it to America. In 2020 there was Karlsruhe and then the plague. At the beginning of September the Wundercar Collection (four E3) will appear at the Classic-Gala in Schwetzingen, Germany. Christian Zschocke is looking forward to it. Me, too.

Very nice. I enjoyed that. At the very end of the video, I could see the front seats trimmed in what I believe to be the Corduroy/velour fabric material, but more importantly, there were no headrests. When was the E3 fitted with headrests? Perhaps it was country specific. Does anyone know?

All correct. Being an original Chamonix car the seats are trimmed in dark blue cloth S 48/39. Hard to believe but the upholstery is immaculate. I am not sure, however, if the seats are the original ones. As a USA model the car might have started with dark blue vinyl K 49/39. In the USA, to my knowledge front headrests were required from model year 1969 on. The New Horizon should have had them when new. They probably got lost at some point in life which didn't matter because the car never went to America, anyway, see above.

Headrests were optional for the 2500 most of the time for most countries. In Sweden they were mandatory from the beginning, I guess. For Gemany, it was as follows:
Series 1 (68/aut-71/spr)
front only, 2500 optional, 2800 standard
Series 2 (71/spr-73/sum)
front & rear, 2500 & 2800 optional, 3.0 S & 3.0 Si standard
Series 3 (73/aut-77/feb)
front all models standard, rear 2500 optional, all other standard

The car was at the BMW Classic display at Amelia Island in 2019.

Question--Do these art cars such as this one have a clear coat over all of the graphics?
This car for sure. Heiner Meyer says it in the video, unfortunately in German. There are nine layers of paint on the New Horizon. Going over the panels you can actually feel them. The New Horizon is not an Art Car, however. Christian likes to not compete with BMW. Art Car is the term for the cars owned and mostly commissioned by BMW themselves.

Most Art Cars (BMW cars) should have a clear coat, at least added later in life. On some I doubt it, for various reasons: Warhol, Kayama, Holzer, Koons. Not sure by far, this is only a guess. The Art Cars are not on public display all the time, so we can't just go and check.

I love everything about this car - the restoration, the art work, the way it makes you smile. I commend the owner for all parts of the execution he commissioned here - its absolutely beautiful

I wonder if anybody actually knows Christian Zschocke personally, I would love to reach out to him. As I also have an E3 in my collection (a 3.3li Manual) painted by Dexter Brown over the weekend at Genoa Motorfair in 1994.

Feel free to PM me if you feel comfortable making an introduction
